FTSE 100 movers: Gold stocks shine

Mon, 25th Jul 2011 11:40

Gold production companies Fresnillo and Randgold were among the top risers in the FTSE 100 after the price of gold increased.Fresnillo was the biggest mover seeeing its share price rise 2.74% to 1,727.00p. Randgold Resources did less well but its shares were still up 1.16% to 5,660p. The price of silver was also higher. Nervousness over the US debt talks has boosted precious metals' haven appeal.Electricity and gas network operator National Grid is another riser in the Footsie, with its share price rose rising 1.07% to 616.5p following a strong performance since the start of the financial year. Steve Holliday, chief executive, said: "The year has started well with our businesses making good initial progress toward their priorities and delivering solid operational and financial performance." He added: "We reconfirm our positive outlook for 2011/12 - we expect to deliver another year of good operating performance, although, as previously highlighted, comparative financial results will show some impact from the timing differences that benefited 2010/11." Despite a rise after last week's euro deal, Barclays, RBS and Lloyds all saw their share price fall as a result of concern about the future of the single currency. Ahead of tomorrow's second quarter results drug maker GlaxoSmithKline, shares in the drug company have risen 1.45% to 1,360.50p. Imperial Tobacco has risen 0.84% to 2,169.00p the day before the Lambert & Butler maker's interim management statement.
