Chariot working with Total Eren at Mauritania green hydrogen project

Tue, 06th Sep 2022 17:14

(Alliance News) - Chariot Ltd and Total Eren on Tuesday announced a feasibility study to co-develop the Nour project, a large scale green hydrogen project in Mauritania.

Mauritania, the companies said, is well-placed to implement power-to-X solutions. The partnership with be equally owned by Africa-focused energy company Chariot and renewable energy firm Total Eren. Oil and gas firm TotalEnergies SE has a stake in Total Eren.

Power-to-X is an umbrella term for a number of conversion, storage and reconversion pathways that use surplus electric power from renewable energy. X stands for the type of energy into which the electricity surplus is being converted, such as heat, hydrogen or synthetic fuels.

The ability to convert excess electricity into other types of fuel helps to spread the benefit of renewable energy.

Through the Nour project, the consortium will contribute to sustainable economic development in Mauritania.

The consortium claim that, once fully implemented, it could become "one of the most significant green hydrogen projects in Africa."

It will also provide a cost-effective, transportable energy solution to replace CO2 emitting fuels for exportation to the European market

Chariot Chief Executive Officer Adonis Pouroulis said: "We look forward to working together on this highly important green hydrogen development in Mauritania. Having a partner of such calibre, who shares our vision and focus for the future, is a key part of developing this valuable asset and marks an important step forward in project Nour's evolution."

Shares in Chariot closed 0.5% lower at 18.70 pence each in London on Tuesday afternoon.
