Oops. So I see what is happening.
No, I don't short at all. I do work for them so I what is happening.
I will take it your short Tesco lol
With such a tiny margin in food retailing this will not offset the wage increase plus the 10% bonus. Even the call centre and Welwyn folk, now mostly working from home with their newly supplied kit, well kiss goodbye to £1,000,000 there too.
10.35 - you need to factor in the fact that if people are not in their offices where they would often be buying lunch from Greggs, Subway, M&S (and other such outlets) etc or even going out to restaurants and pubs they will be buying from the big supermarkets instead - would therefore expect all s/markets to be one-off beneficiaries for the next few months before people are able to return to work.
Advanced purchases is deferred consumption. When demand slows down the hoarded stock will be used and sales will declined. It all balances out in the end. Many pubs buy their spirits and beers from Tesco and Booker. Simply a customer swap. But the costs have soared. More colleagues being taken on and all colleagues, just about the largest cost, will get a 10% bonus throughout the crisis. So, over time, the sales won't be hugely higher but the costs will be higher. And next year, this year's rolled over holidays will affect the number of in store staff.
The driver training is only 1 -2 days, then normally 2 weeks driving with an experienced driver, but I would think that would be waived. There response to this crisis has been superb. At this low or even lower? price, this is an excellent buy for the future.
My local Tesco in Lowestoft turns around 500000 a week

you also have the fact that the government have lifted some of the constraints on delivery times & driver hours, so this means the existing assets are used more, at little incremental cost
I’ve been to three different Sainsbury’s stores and a Tesco store this weekend and all four had almost empty shelves when it came to lagers, plenty of craft beers but the popular lagers and beers were gone...I can’t see any reason to discount alcohol when future deliveries are received....
Surely a positive when it comes to the SP here.
Also, I’m not too sure what the canning capacity is for UK breweries.... I still think the vast majority of beer and lager sales are made through barrels and kegs so the price of cans and bottles may go up quite a bit.....
Just my thoughts...

With pubs shutting, restaurants shutting, supermarkets will be selling more food to be used at home.Wine beers spririts ciders will all get sales increase.when boris said pubs to shut Friday evening all alcoholic drinks started walking out the doors
Hiring more staff and training them up is a fairly straight forward process (I would presume) but buying more specialised delivery vehicles is more complicated? It would take a couple of months for more vans to join the delivery fleet at a guess? Does anyone know?..... I think the panic buying will eventually subside a bit, but people will remain well stocked up for quite a while just in case. With pubs and restaurants closed this will undoubtedly add to sales. I think the SP will hold up but any large gains are a bonus and can't be relied on IMO.
Tesco being the biggest food retailer will benefit the most, they do need to ramp up staff levels and supplies to meet this extra volume coming their way.
already got a bump from panic buying, going to get another from pubs/restaurants closing. people will be buying more food/alcohol.
Taverham.......probably because I bought! Even worse I sold Tui at a big loss to buy, Tui up 30% since I sold them :-(
Record sales, obviously and the sp falls- why?
Its not bulk buying that's the issue now its EVERYONE buying 1/2 items every day which can't be controlled but will be caught up once it slows down which it will.

Why not close the shops and stick to deliveries where someone can control whats being purchased??
SP holding very well glad to see. With div and special div at some stage what’s not to like. This is a lot better than most of my other Ftse 100 shares which have tanked.

Hang in there buddy..... for a while the big four have taken a bashing from likes of Aldi and Lidl but in times like these we realise how important it is to have a good choice of supermarkets with robust supply chains and plenty of outlets everywhere. If this was soviet Russia in the 1970's we would be facing real problems.... Capitalism is far from perfect but at least it is keeping us fed (at the moment). Just my opinion.
The footfall through the supermarkets is unprecedented and yet none of our local supermarkets are sanitising trolleys, keypads or anything else for that matter. When is somebody going to wake up to this it’s a breeding ground
Tesco are preparing also for when they are short of staff due to illness and self isolating.
Yes the tills are in overdrive now, but once this is all over, those tills will become quiet. People will have so much stocked piled stuff, they won't be shopping as much .
yes. I saw a notice seeking temp staff in my local tesco today. Cafe closed and at 8am there were lots of empty shelves unfortunately. Tea in short supply unless you want decaf muck
I see most Tesco stores are trying hard to hire extra staff to help them through the extra business that is coming their way with this crisis. All the supermarkets are going to do very well ober the next few months. This is now the time to be jumping aboard.
