Hi OT, fatoomuch made a post on Monday at 14.47 with a link to an Hydroflex article. A Canadian company Ballard was quoted as supplying the fuel Cells. But nothing about TPG! I think design/consultancy/coordination is where we might be at because TPG seems conspicuous by It's absence in a supply side. I find it a bit of a mystery actually.
Apologies for double posts gents for some reason it keeps happening that 1st one does not show up
Have a good evening gents some good debate today.
TP Group (AIM: TPG), the providers of mission-critical solutions for a more secure world, announces that it has signed a contract with a train leasing company to supply hydrogen fuel cell systems for passenger trains.
Looks more like a supply contract to me Truro ?

Well it seems that we may be in a consultancy role here rather than actually engineering. Presumably then we could sell engineering and perhaps retain consultancy. Now, I wonder if this has occurred to the BoD!
Months before any of the announcements TPG commented on a hydroflex tweet saying they were looking forward to working with them. There has been lots of trade coverage around this project and more info found here than in the Rns. When it was first announced plenty of people tried to write Tp group off by hinting they were a minority part involved in the safety element of the fuel tank. The last Rns was more positive and the step up to prime contractor suggest far more involvement. If you were to look at the three companies involved which one has the most experience and resource to drive this to commercial completion
Agree with that. Looked like TPG came to the table pretty late on HydroFlex - and not seen much mention of their part other than from them.
The latter announcement looks more positive - but not sure Porterbrook would dump 2 years worth of work on HydroFlex - as the TPG RNS of Feb states:
"The system will be deployed on a modified passenger train for a series of proving and demonstration activities."
Yes, my understanding was that TPG are bringing the systems integration and software expertise to this, rather than any of the electrolysis or fuel cell hardware, but happy to be corrected if anyone knows more.
You make a very valid point Truro it looks like initially a consultancy role.
However in the latest RNS we seem to be taking on a far bigger role
“
TP Group is acting as the prime contractor for the integrated hydrogen fuel system, building upon the Group's preliminary consulting work to define system requirements and specify a suitable system configuration for safe operation in this application. The system will be deployed on a modified passenger train for a series of proving and demonstration activities.
Thanks OT, my concern is that I saw no logo and heard no word about TPG . If all we did was give "shoehorn" experience gained from Subs then our future involvement will be limited to design only. Possibly electrolysis expertise?
Taken from RNS 17 th Sept
“ Phil Cartmell, Chief Executive Officer of TP Group, commented:
"We are very pleased to join the team working on the HydroFLEX project. Together, our three companies bring a wealth of specialist experience and technologies and are well placed to deliver innovative real-world solutions. Our joint goal is now to explore global opportunities for hydrogen-based transport solutions and to be an influential part of this rapidly growing market sector."
Many thanks to the links to Hydroflex. No mention of TPG though. Are we actually involved?
Science
We are in a five year research program in a fully Hydrogen train
1st stage - can it be done and show case it - YES
2nd stage - can we reduce size and fit on conventional trains ?
3rd stage - safety of product & fail safes ?
4th stage - signed off by all parties
What is TP Group involvement - which have not seen a clear statement
Long Term this is a game changer
Thanks for the link fatoomch I had not read that either. So if we look here
https://www.railway-technology.com/news/uks-foak-opens-9m-fund/
Another fund available we have a JV with a train company do you think it is possible that we are working with Porterbrook to build a combined hydrogen/ electric train?
Some more good digging, OT :-)
Don't remember seeing this from TPG website.
It runs over 2 pages - top half of page 14, follows on top half of page 15. A bit more detail on who does what.

This part is quite interesting
6.5 Going forward, a feasibility study has been commissioned with the University of Birmingham to examine the potential configuration and recommended design of a production unit of the train. A further collaborative research project is exploring concept design for the world’s first bi-mode electric/hydrogen train and other projects, including new train production and design specifications

A bit more info here Truro

Many thanks OT for the link, I'd not seen it before. Does anybody have any update or do we wait until the end of March for some sort of report?
fatmooch this is a great video on the demonstrator
https://player.vimeo.com/video/360798327
Noted that Ballard provided the fuel cell maybe TPG will be supplying a similar unit in The JV they have mentioned ?
Nice find OT
"The development of the demonstrator was, up
to March 2020, part-funded by Innovate UK.
The same BCRRE/Porterbrook team has remained
in place to deliver this next stage of the project,
again funded by Innovate UK. The funding was
granted in June 2020 and the project will be
completed by the end of March 2021."
Bit of an update on next phase of Hydroflex project on page 26
