As for CHIM's,they can take up to 2 year to develop and be very costly..India said the wouldn't do Challenge Studies because the costs would 'involve huge costs'..so its better to buy that develop. So yes as of now Hvivo have a monopoly!
'Human challenge trials have never been done in India and creating infrastructure for these studies will take time and involve huge costs, experts say
OTHER PROBLEMS
Human challenge trials are conducted on young and healthy volunteers. These are late stage trials, so eventually when the vaccine is developed, one will be unable to gauge if it will work on other population groups given that they were not the volunteers for the trial. If a disease as infectious as Covid-19 was being tested, the participants would also require isolation.'
They have if you just did a basic search...Pretty much all the vaccines so far have been given fast track approval by their respective Government.

Bronx, surely it's relevant that neither Sinopharm nor Sinovax have even published full phase 3 results yet, let alone had them peer reviewed. Let's keep our fingers crossed for the countries which have approved them for use, and hope nothing goes wrong with them, because it could affect the whole industry. Meanwhile, back on the point: China ideally should be able to do their own CHIMs, eventually, but in the meantime they possibly need ORPHs' help.
Bronx - don't think so ... Spudnik is a manufacturer of potato equipment in the United States
Hey 'toastal' Apple stole most of Nokia's patents.
Look in front of you Apple Amazon FB Google have their tenticles in almost everything and are destroying society and they ain't Chinese!
You guys really should educate yourselves about vaccines..the world isnt all about the western world and media..
The Chinese have their own vaccines..Sinopharm and Sinovax are just 2..The Hungarians started dosing this week.Sinopharm has a market cap of 8 billion $ and it 50% owned by Fosun Pharma market cap 18 billion..
And the Russians didnt steal the data from the UK..Spudnik is a real vaccine produced in Russia and approved by The Lancet.
I think you missed the point toastal, it's not a matter of attitude, but of capability. If they are so good at replicating, why are Pfizer, AZ, Moderna vaccines used rather than theirs? Also, no need to suspect they carry out unethical trials on soldiers and hospital workers - we already know they have done that.
I disagree..........the Chinese can replicate ANYTHING and will not be concerned about copyrights/patents/stepping on anyone’s toes. Hell, I suspect they’ve been doing trials all along using soldiers and the like. They are a completely different breed of animal and nobody should underestimate what they’re capable of!
Currently I believe Hvivo are the only company that have the ability to carry out HCT. So at present you could say they have the monopoly. However It is not impossible that someone else, a company/government like the Chinese could start carrying out HCT although it is not something that is very easy to do. The most difficult part of it being the challenge agent required to perform a trial which requires a high level of expertise to create of which as I understand it there are very few people in the world that have this skill which is where the presently Hvivo employed Adrian Wildfire et al come in.
Human challenge trials to assess the efficacy of currently approved COVID-19 vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 variants
‘We are proposing the use of HCTs to rapidly evaluate the efficacy of currently approved COVID-19 vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 variants, including B.1.1.7 (UK), B.1.351 (South Africa) and B.1.1.248 (Brazil)….
…. The final decision could be made based on the results from the UK HCT, which will begin within a month….
…..Therefore, the main proposal here is that the HCT can shorten the time for evaluating the protection rate of a previously approved vaccine against a SARS-CoV-2 variant. If the approved vaccines are still effective, the public's concerns can be allayed. If they become ineffective against these variants, new vaccines can be quickly designed and evaluated with COVID-19 HCTs, finally resulting in the approval and production of an effective and safe “updated” vaccine long before the next, potentially more virulent, SARS-CoV-2 variant spreads around the world.’
As pointed out by Drs. Plotkin and Caplan, "extraordinary diseases require extraordinary solutions"

The Fund is administered by the Natural Science Foundation of China (“NSFC”), which was founded in 1986 under the State Council, and now under the supervision of MOST. The NSFC, which has a strong reputation of fairness and rigor in the management of scientific projects and grants, is responsible for directing, coordinating and making effective use of the National Natural Science Fund while stimulating free exploration, identifying and fostering scientific talents and teams, and promoting science and technology development in line with the country’s strategies and needs’.

Sound’s like China may be on the cusp of participating in Covid CHIM’s, once hVIVO have started the initial UK study.
No doubt more large contracts incoming for ORPH – I’m sure Cathal did say £30-40 million per Chinese Covid CHIM!
