On Trade demand now at 85% of pre Covid levels against expectations of closer to 45%. This is impacting brewers availability as Off Trade sales are still in great growth. However Off Trade growth is slowing, Our Marston's sales are +49% last 13 weeks slowing to +9% last 4 weeks. I'm still happy with this performance. GLA
Jim, on which portal is this data available?
On Trade performance read is from one of the major brewers, Marston 's sales are our own sales performance. We are a multi £bn wholesaler. Detail is live as of this week.
@ KahunaJim. Are you saying this data isn't publicly available? A shame as it's the kind of information I would be happy to pay for. I wonder if good current demand could partly be down to pubs needing major re-stocks coming out of lockdown (ie. fleeting)
General market sales data is freely available in my trade and useful to me when considering range decisions and stock holding. I wouldn't expect to get any specific sales data for the Marstons estate, my wholesalers would have very little engagement with them so they are a competitor. We only buy from them for our Off Trade business so I couldn't say how well the pubs and hotels are performing right now. I will be visiting the Honeystone in Hunstanton tomorrow night to 'help out' for some research. On previous visits the car park was rammed, hoping for more of the same.
So the data is somewhat ambigous as it is general and does not specify the time period under comparison, only say pre-covid which could mean January,February or March when demand is at it's lowest. A better comparison would be July/August 2019.
With eat out and help out scheme it will be very disappointing should the Honeystone not be busy.
I think the point is the recovery is way ahead of where industry experts were forecasting and there is robust demand for UK beer sales.
It will be very disappointing if food led pubs are quiet on a Monday night this August and even more so in this spell of good weather in the south. However that wasn't my experience last week on my first week of staycation in Brighton so I doubt there will be any change next week. Despite this anecdotal ramble, my original post was factual and intended to be helpful. Feel free to ignore it if you believe it is too ambiguous. GLA
Jim it is important that facts are confirmed and qualified against known comparitiors. For your source to say pre-covid could mean anytime at all before March, hence a comparable time period should be used.
It would be good if Marstons can give us some data on sales, wholesale and retail, for the period since Pubs re-opened.
Great idea, suggest you ask them and share with the board. I’ll get to work on my next post now.
called in thirsk all last week, wheatherspoons queueing down street, marstons pub opposite 3in.
Talking to my friendly landlord he is sure pubs will be closed before schools open and that’s coming from head office grr ffs
I own a pub and I know several people who also own pubs, all are reporting near pre-covid sales, eat out scheme is creating an increase in food and soft drink sales of up to 500% increase - but usual Monday Tuesday sales are so low it makes that sound good even if it isn’t!
Draught sales in my pub are UP compared to pre-covid.
@daave To be fair with weather like it is at present we should be expecting record sales. I know it doesn't follow that we'll get them anyway, post covid, but if we were not seeing big sales now the question of pubs existence would surely be raised ? As it is your news is encouraging as it surely shows that people have missed the pub trips in the last few months & are hopefully getting back into the habit again.
@fairdealer Good stuff, setting the record straight there, mind you if our pubs had given birth after lockdown to create 800 more, then I guess our debt would have done the same to our balance sheet !
