Ethiopian opposition OLF figure shot dead and dumped by road
A top Ethiopian opposition figure has been shot dead and his body found on the side of a road in his hometown in Meki, in the troubled Oromia region.
Bate Urgessa, 41, was an outspoken critic of the government and had been jailed on several occasions.
Family members told local news site, Addis Standard, people who "looked like government security forces" took him from his hotel room on Tuesday night.
The Oromia regional government denied that security forces were involved.
In recent years Ethiopia has seen an increase in the killing of political and cultural figures.
Mr Bate was a senior official of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) - one of the biggest political parties in Ethiopia.
The OLF condemned the "brutal murder" of Mr Bate and said he was a "eloquent, brave and selfless Oromo soul".
"The unwarranted and extrajudicial killing of conscious and active Oromo political and cultural figures has been a systematic and irresponsible act of silencing the Oromo throughout years and decades," the statement said.
His death has sparked outraged across social media, while human rights groups are demanding justice.
Chief commissioner of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) Daniel Bekele posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the federal authorities need "to hold perpetrators to account".
Phone lines are cut off in the town but it is unclear if the killing of Mr Bate will trigger protests.
Mr Bate has been jailed several times in recent years, but has remained an advocate of non-violent dissent.
In February security forces accused him of "working to incite unrest." He was arrested while being interviewed by French journalist Antoine Galindo and later released on bail.
Galindo was released after a week in jail and returned to Paris.
The OLF boycotted the last general election, in 2021, saying the political space was too narrow to operate.
At the time it accused the government of arresting several of its members, supporters and leaders.
The Oromo ethnic group is the largest in Ethiopia but some of its leaders say they have suffered discrimination from the country's traditional elites.
The OLF used to be an armed group but laid down its weapons in 2018 after Abiy Ahmed, an ethnic Oromo, became prime minister.
However, the OLF has since become disillusioned with Mr Abiy.

13 arrested in Ethiopia over killing of Oromo opposition figure
Police in Ethiopia have arrested 13 suspects over the killing of a prominent opposition figure from the restive state of Oromia, official regional media reported.
The body of Bate Urgessa of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) was found dumped on a road outside the town of Meki on Wednesday, shortly after he had been arrested by “government forces”, the party said.
The United States, the European Union and Britain have joined rights campaigners in calling for a full investigation into the killing of Bate, an outspoken politician who had spent several years in and out of detention.
Police in the East Shawa zone where Meki is located have arrested 13 suspects over the shooting, the Oromia Broadcasting Network said on Facebook late Thursday, adding that Bate had been buried at a ceremony in Meki that day.
No details about the suspects were disclosed.
The 41-year-old Bate had been released on bail early last month following his arrest alongside French journalist Antoine Galindo in February.
But he was arrested again late on Tuesday by “government armed forces” at a hotel in his hometown of Meki, 150 kilometres (90 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa, OLF spokesman Lemi Gemechu had told AFP.
“He was then briefly taken to a detention centre in the city,” Lemi said.
Bate’s family said he was found dead on Wednesday morning on a road on the outskirts of Meki, he added.
Every dollar increase in the gold price should get through to the bottom line.
It should cost no more to extract the gold it is just the profit margin gets bigger.
Just a pity the financing hasn’t got sorted.
Gold price could easily top $3000 in the next few weeks.
Worth nothing to us unless the mine is financed.
@NickE Thanks for that link - I mean first frame HAA biggest smile eva! Guy is clearly very happy, very relaxed....hmm
Does that corner circle the globe?
Thanks for posting the interview link NickE. Sounds very upbeat and news from all projects seems just around the corner...
Imagine how well they would be doing if this company had got off the ground some years ago - the constant delays are now v. costly

One of the best interviews Harry has done and full of specific and positive content. Focused on the gold price and junior mining index which was interesting in itself. Highlighted that in 2011 when Gold was at record lows the index was at record highs at 700 now it is at record lows (40) when the gold price is at a record high. As he says it's lagging but inevitably will play catch up and when it pops it will do so significantly.
Updates on TK and Saudi flagged up for this month and next month, expected full docs sign off by end of May for TK (internal processes showing it’s all on track) and confirmation there is now a specialist police force permanently assigned to maintain security for mining projects including TK.
Seems to suggest Saudi resources have been expanded from recent drilling. We’ll hear more this month on that and they are of course getting closer to producing an NPV for the Saudi assets which will be a trigger in itself for a KEfi re-rate.
He made the point that the producers will be throwing off cash and looking for acquisitions. It was clear that he was implying with gold at its current price and trend that Kefi is very much in play. Or more accurately it will be when TK funding is signed off. That comment in this interview ties in with his aside in the Investor Meet presentation where he said he was regularly being approached by people at Saudi conferences making all sorts of offers.
At this rate Kefi will be an M&A target and Harry will need a new job.
Thanks Bear looks like Harry is gradually realizing that we have a gold price that is likely to go higher with projects that are economic on a much lower gold price and kefi might get "consolidated". Hopefully we will not get any more of that consensus gold price forecasts BS that were laughingly wrong on the low side should have asked me as I obviously got more idea than whoever is advising the company.
Well they decided to change the spread and move up the bid to 0.57p
There was a 2M buy just before ... 11:45:48 - 0,576 - 2,000,000
Meanwhile some are buying on large size at the lower price
Tommo - the reason for Kefi's share price is slumbering because of it is history... and HAA's poor delivery and failures... kept kicking the can down the road... :)
There will be a black Swan event. That's the nature of 'Frontier markets.' The sp would not be at this price if it was a 'done deal.'
Always has been and always will be 'high risk.'
*Even once funding and production starts.
There are more than FourCandles or BAAstards around
Three thoughts. Surely with the gold price having fired up to $2400, you would think finance sign off has became rather more attractive than a few weeks ago. Secondly, the NPV calculations must be looking damn juicy right now. And thirdly, given the discount kefi trades to even NAV's done on $1750 gold... the gearing here is incredible.
IMO about now Kefi should be shooting the lights out. But it keeps slumbering so far...
Or a candle in the wind ? LOL , i think for now we should try to forget this killing unless it is clear that it will affect our bank sign off. Happier things to think about, like harry getting an OBE perhaps ??
Or the starting next year of Starmergeddon in the UK :-(
