Sterling's precipitous slide against the dollar has wiped out most of the benefits British Airways has seen from the lower oil price, the Daily Telegraph reported. I really see no good news supporting BA and despite recent hold recomendations from some brokers , will continue to short. I also opened up a short on stage coach and rolls royce as I feel that the strengthening dollar will similarly weaken both their earnings and both had recent rallys.
...the short , BA is like swimming in a pond , need this , need that , not survive by its lonesome ... I am on my short.
What does it take for these shares to get off their arse and rocket!!! BA agrrement with American Airlines and Iberia!! NOTHING!!! FFS, BA by the end of the year will be one of THREE maximum airlines running in the UK! How the feck are these shares not rocketing!?
Oil prices end slightly higher after Israeli deputy leader warns of Iranian nuclear threat ! Unless they control the middle east pump supply there will be volatile oil prices and no stable control. To achieve that it may require some more gulf wars to control the entire middle east. Forget the deadline we all know the Iranians will not succumb and if they're really forced to the limits like Iraq they could burn oil fields block supplies and yes hell break loose.
...can you imagine a flight for fun seekers only... those were the days . Where you had a good time , joined the 5 mile high club if you wanted , had a smoke , drowned in your drink and had a laugh with the hostess or himess or whatever they call them politically now. You get jack now and a grilling at the other end , I have even heard they will ground the flight if you do not fit in with the herd.
...its a bit like tesco being financial players in years to come , airlines simply become oil players.
... thats the fuel bill , ish , or buy out the likes of BPat c.£150 Billion today. Its a bit like a mortgage. Get a few like minded aero heads together to control high end costs. I am not saying that BP be the target as Aero fuel may not be the name of the game with BP , but BP makes c.£25billion or so pa so that should leave a few planes in the air somewhere along the belt and give investors in airlines a bit of hope!! Lets face it , if you could borrow £150 Billion at 10% interest only that would cost £15 Billion , maybe airlines should buy Shell to. Set up a company and borrow the monies from Japan or the likes this would be somewhat less , throw them a slice of the action and pull in a few global airlines to put some cash on the table and its like , hello!!
...don't get me wrong , but if BA spend a current c.£3 billion in fuel pa , I am sure they would have thought about fuel years ahead. When aviation fuel was cheap , where was the bulk buy. It is basic stuff 'Oh ,yeh , we need fuel to make the planes go. Its cheap so why not buy a shed load.Yeh, remember the last couple of gulf wars and the price of the black stuff went up , maybe we should have got into a contract with some geezer that could pump us some cheap avgas.' Its what , as if they cannot negotiate... come on at £3 billion cash burn they should be buying Oil reserves direct and implimenting refinery lines and selling the stuff on. I am gearing every care home I have on solar and heat pumps to work with the best condensors. I have remained with my supplier of gas and elec for years as they know its monies. The bottom line is that airlines should club together and buy out and control high end costs , merging is second class stuff.
BA , like BT , and others , have hands tied , agenda in script and management protocol in pace. I hold both stocks but currently long BT and short BA. T5 at Heathrow in Spanish hands as an operation in receiving BA , will be typical in any so called merger with Iberia and it will , imo , be many years , if approved at all , B4 shareholders receive any benifit what so ever. Speculation and bull runs on BA's so called good news and current aviation fuel weakness? is , what I enjoy , in order that I be able to cap and cash.
I agree with mark-expat plus BA 'srecord in sealing deals has never been very successful in the past. I've a feeling that history will repeat itself. I've noticed in many cases when bad news is out some power will push prices up with no logical reasoning before they dip very heavily. Guys lets think when the merger started to stir did we see £2.70+ why do we see this now when the profit dip is so sharp. Does it make sense to anyone ? I remembered this was the case for alliance and leicester a few months ago and see how badly they suddenly toppled.
BA , despite reasonable strength of position both on their books and within their slots , are not making enough monies to justify their own existance let alone manage to create synergy savings with Iberia Airlines. I long BA from 200 or sub , if I can get it , after shorting from 250 or higher , if I can get it. BA is basically a hedge against falling oil prices for many , bottom line is what is clearly admitted by BA . Whilst stability within the oil markets is remains so, the airline business model is broken and a bit of glue will not make it or other airlines truely fly again. They have just paid their first dividend in years and unlikely do so again. IMO , buying BA stock at such value is like flying in the wind.
With todays results of a dive in profits of such magnitude I am surprised that the share price can shoot up to £2.73 The merge talks are months away and the worries over Iran has lifted oil again. I will not be surprised to see British Airways begin to seriously fall next week. The merge talk is months away and any profit loss of that magnitude should surely have an impact. I will personally not be taking BA knowing that I will've to pay so much more for their drawback. I would like to see how other members see this?
what's with the rise ? I thought these were due to drop today ????
I can see me loosing my luggage when this opens
RNS Number : 1030A British Airways PLC 29 July 2008 IBERIA MERGER TALKS British Airways and Iberia are holding talks with a view to an all-share merger between the two companies. The negotiations are supported unanimously by the boards of both companies. The British Airways and Iberia brands would be retained as part of a combined group. Iberia's chairman and chief executive, Fernando Conte, said: "A merger would be good news for our customers and enhance our existing relationship. We've worked together for nearly 10 years and a tie-up would build on that success. It would also strengthen the oneworld alliance and further develop Madrid's position as the European gateway to Latin America". British Airways' chief executive, Willie Walsh, said: "The aviation landscape is changing and airline consolidation is long overdue. The combined balance sheet, anticipated synergies and network fit between the airlines make a merger an attractive proposition, particularly in the current economic environment. We've had a successful relationship with Iberia for a decade and are confident that both companies' shareholders would benefit from the proposed tie-up". British Airways acquired a nine per cent shareholding in Iberia in 1999 and has recently increased its shareholding to 13.15 per cent. Iberia has announced today that it has recently acquired a 2.99 per cent direct shareholding in British Airways and financial exposure to a
chiffa you knob head lol
good time to buy?thing is how far up can it go now,is it going to get in a new lower sp range now? say 150-190 or ..chiffa what technical analysis have u used for ur conclusion?
i agree with you yet it does take quite some time to oscillate between 200 and 250,3-4 weeks maybe more.now 204,will it go below 200?technical analysis may help?
BAs 1500 cabin crew are about to be attacked by walsh like he did at air lingus,we will not lay down and surrender our contracts ,this will either make or break BA.BAs management r asset stripping a fantastic companey 4 short term gain sooner their out the better.
for me , I think that shorters are buying their positions due to declaration regulations next week. Oil is c.$134 , Opec have said that it will not increase supply , Heathrow Terminals have declared their biggest delays since records began, airlines are going bust left right and centre , airlines only want to increase prices whilst consumers have less disposable income and with downgrades persisting through the sector , enjoy the ride. For me , I opened a short at the end of trade today but if the SP goes north on Monday , I am going along for the flight as this one may well have been held back through major shorting. I tend to achieve 250 and then look to short to sub 210 and then buy back for ride back up to 250.
big rise today, last time it was in this territory(240-255)oil was $122,oil 133 today and sp still up,whats going on?if oil goes down tommorrow will we see 250's whith oil above 130?
rish = rich ... i am so far from it i can't even spell it LOL
You have literally thousands of RBS ? Oh to be rish .. i bet you have lost a packet and a half in the last year or so. How many BAY do you have ?
Hi ihavenoclue - thanks very much for that, its taken me ages to finally get someone to tell me what is going on. Relieved to know I will get some sort of payout - have thousands of RBS shares as well and that one is a real minefield at the moment. Oh well - glad I found this site where I can ask questions. Cheers now!
