Hi all,
Closer to home, here's a well-reasoned argument to put UK news in perspective : most deaths are 'with' the virus, not 'from 'it....bit like prostate cancer, actually …;-<

Elsewhere I read 60,000… 42k or 60k sound so much more plausible considering the population, eating habits and living conditions (especially in the mega-factories). In another 20 to 30 years the truth might just surface.
Locals in Wuhan believe 42,000 people may have died there from Corona Virus.

Longwait .
Your statement maybe accurate now but about a week ago the opposite was allegedly true . Victims succumbing to the virus who had an underling condition were reported as having died from the underling condition .
Not sure I would believe anything the BBC had to report if they were involved .
Thanks, CS.
Germany's latest daily death toll is 92, with a hundred times that number having recovered - a most remarkable statistic.
Andrew Neil has investigated and reports that The Germans are reporting anyone who died with underlying health conditions from CV as a CV death in line with uk.
Longwait,
"Poker gatherings, whose participants are deemed to be misbehaving, could be next.
If you are mandatorily confined, Double, let us know and we'll send the special commando unit to get you out."
Thanks for the thought, but the 'commando unit' would end up tangling with the police, so maybe not a good idea. For your possible interest, this is what it's like right now. Because further 'mandatory measures' are no doubt coming your way soon in the UK.
I can leave my flat to goto work (not applicable), go to a doctor or hospital (ditto), go shopping for essentials, visit IMMEDIATE family should a family member re quire 'care' (again N/a in my case), or take a quick stroll 'in proximity to my abode' for exercise, or to walk a dog if one has one (I don't). For any of these activities, one has to have a piece of paper (downloaded from the net and PRINTED ON PAPER) signed (on my honour that that's what I'm doing. A screenshot on a phone is no good. Tough luck for people with no printer. Without the bit of paper, it's a 138 euro fine. Although not enshrined in print, 'in proximity' means within about 500 meters of one's house.
What CAN'T I do (some examples)? i can't sit by the river fishing for hours. I can't drive 100 miles to the litte family cottage to cut the grass (which must be getting long, now). I can't drive to visit friends who live in the suburbs, or another town (so no private poker games). And of course I can't sit on a cafe terrace enjoying a beer in the sunshine. 'cos they're all closed.
Of course these measures have only been in place for 6 days, so I haven't started 'testing ' them. I know, for instance, one's not supposed to rendezvous with a friend or friends in a park or similar place. But what if I've got a piece of paper saying I'm out for a walk, and she's driven in from the suburbs to shop at the supermarket next to the park? Might try that.
But what it boils down to is that most of my day is spent at home, feeling somewhat claustrophobic (though it's a big place), and rather lonely. And up until absurd hours playing poker online.
I saw a good 'reader's comment' in today's online Times. "If the pubs are shut, what's the point in wanting to stay alive, anyway"? !!!
Hi soundasapenny,
.."In Germany, if a person who has Covid19 but also has underlying health conditions dies, then their death is reported (in the majority of cases) as being from the underlying health condition. This is not how most other countries are doing it..."
Agreed. Conversely (or should that be - coronavirusly ;-<), in Italy it appears that they're doing the opposite , given understandable time constraints : deaths are reported as CVD, when it's the straw that broke an already overburdened camel's back. 'Pre-existing medical conditions' - whatever age you are - seem to be the principal contributor.
In some narrow senses, there's parallels with prostate cancer : remember that most men die with it, not of it....

sound - always good to hear an opposing view....i often have an opinion but it is just that - open to being proved wrong with reasoned or factual arguments. actually i am not eating any takeaway food at the moment. i feel there is a risk from droplets on any prepared food.
you have a good day too.
sound - have you ever lived in a communist country?
i know china did that - i am not sure germany would ...
genghis - i am not sure you can skew the death figures????...i stopped looking at cases a long time ago as it is dependent on how widespread the testing is.. clearly uk figures are meaningless.
i have always looked at recovery v death rate on closed cases as an indication of the seriousness of this virus
German stats are an anomaly due to skewed testing, og an initially young cohort, they will rise in time to look similar to other countries. Healthcare provision is not the issue - yet- but they do have more ventilators per head for when the surge comes.
Sorry I can't provide a source, but it was a reputable one, I'm sure Mr Google can find it.
longwait - i have always taken the opposing view to you.
firstly there is a big question mark to the accuracy of china's figures. As a polish engineer i was speaking to said yesterday "they are communists - and they never tell the truth they always lie - i know i lived through it". secondly they locked down the area totally. something we cant do
in europe we have the example of italy - and we are following very closely in timeline figures it seems. the italian model is going to be a lot more realistic i fear. sure they have an older population...but we were slower in locking down. they also have more ICU facilities - though it seems if you get that far too often it won't help. my only hope is that the increased washing of hands might have slowed it down...also we dont greet with kisses etc
the asian countries are firstly better prepared (sars etc) and a lot easier to control isolation.
i know nothing about algeria - so cant comment. i am sure individual countries will react differently. for example germany seems to have less fatalities than its peers. maybe better health care facilities? a small comfort if you are german but not for us.
Maybe you're right, but I have been providing percentages of fatalities and recovery rates by country regularly, so I think I have been taking it seriously, but not as seriously as some.
I have just read Wessexmario's comment that 2.5 million could easily die in the USA alone.
I can't see that.
Just over three thousand have died in China, where the outbreak is nearing its end, with an 88 percent recovery rate.
There is no need for the total number of fatalities to reach more than thousands in any single country, although Italy is struggling to contain the outbreak.
The recovery rate has been rising rapidly in South Korea, and is about to breach 30 percent, with deaths in both it and China just three the other day.
In Singapore and Algeria, the recovery rate is 34 percent.
So far, in the USA, there have been 276 deaths in a population of 327 million.
sorry longwait maybe this is to lighthearted
Yes.
We have yet to hear back from Double, but contingency plans are being made.
I'm confident that Double is sufficiently broadminded to accept all eventualities - even boxer briefs.
You seem to have the rescue well in hand so however they are dressed i am sure will be well received
I think your comment is probably the strangest response I have ever received here.
I didn't say the rescuers would be investors.
As to whether they would be wearing underwear during the operation, I really have no idea, but if that kind of detail is important to you, I could make inquiries.
oh dear i thought corona virus and poo was the problem but if investors are going to run around with no UNDERPANTS to rescue the POKER PLAYER then things are bad
But people are still socialising outside, some even organising “corona parties”. The leaders of Germany’s states warned mandatory confinement would be next.
