Something nobody ha mentioned Elon musk said his factories will be producing 10Terrawhat at moment they are in gigawatts that's some ramp up. He also said maximum squeeze will be 2022to 2024 and for the life of me I cannot think of that company that coming online then.
I have great respect for Elon Musk, but, as several posters have commented, he oversimplifies. Clay deposits do have problems. Clay mining is very energy intensive as it requires high temperatures. There are challenges regarding water husbandry, too and also clogging of the machinery. One of the largest clay deposits is at Senora, Mexico, a joint enterprise between Bacanora and Genfang, the Chinese Lithium major. Senora is, however, situated in real bandit (drug cartel) country and the Mexican government, while supportive, may want to apply taxes. One can understand why Musk's focus is on Nevada for what will be massive lithium requirements for his expanding US enterprise.
The smart money will press for local processing which the dual advantage of optimising vertical integration and minimising logistical supply-line costs. EMH's collaboration with SMS looks timely and smart.
It will be truly fascinating to watch the automobile space and we will see huge changes. The EU will be keen to protect the hitherto very strong German manufacturers and will be desperate to support Italian manufacturing. As we know, Italy's economy is fragile and there are fears of an Ital-Exit from the EU.
All good for EMH ! Good luck everybody.
“We take the dirt and take lithium out and put the lump of dirt back,” he said.
Rpks, if only everything in life was that simple lol lol
I have a family member who works for a similar company to SMS Group Process Technologies GmbH and they too are German, what they can achieve and the Absolute attention to detail is seriously Mindblowing.
Keith yet again has pulled the Genie Out Of The Bottle.
Seriously,
IN IT TO WIN IT - SNOOZE YOU LOSE
Looking Goooood
Musk always seems to over simplify things. I would like to read more detail. (I always remember his bendable, mini submarine.)
Musk stated that Lithium was readily available worldwide. He has a large stake in Nevada lithium exploration and clearly his intention is to use the clay based deposit for his US battery production in due course. He is good at hyping his products but then which manufacturer wouldn't. The message I took away was the huge cost reduction in his dry battery line. If other battery manufacturers do not somehow develop alternative patents, there wet battery vehicles will remain expensive and heavy. Tesla will rule the motoring world and to to ensure consumer choice he will buy out General Motors, Fiat, Jaguar etc which will then use his technology.
Keith wants to get in touch with Tesla see if the process can be applied to spodeumen. It seems like the evaporation process grind clays to very fine dust add salty water and then evaporate the salts out?????. This is off the wall if right nobody though of doing this unbelievable. The presentation showed the processes using sulphuric acid I bet that's the same as ours. If we could convert process we will rule the world. Keith needs to be asking the chemical engineers some hard questions today. Mr musk just disrupted batteries.
Musk / must of perfected the hydroxide processing ,I wonder How cost effective it is compared to EMH hard rock route,
Watched the presentation last night. The Tesla mine is in Nevada and covers an area of 20,000 acres. There is enough lithium there to switch over the USA to ev completely. The clay lithium process was mentioned but it was so simplistic it left me thinking it was brinkmanship ie just add table salt and hey presto.
Tesla had a NDA with BACANORA in the past where their clay deposit is VAST, I dont know of any other clay deposits of a large size, plus I dont know How easy or possible to get hydroxide from it either, it was being worked on and heard little more on that.

Musk also said Tesla had developed a lithium process and had secured its own lithium clay deposit that he said would supply enough lithium for all US-made vehicles for the future.
Tesla will take that raw lithium material and use table salt to extract the lithium from clay.
“We take the dirt and take lithium out and put the lump of dirt back,” he said.
Fingersxed and Lawrence Howie:
Is it realistic in the near future?
How much can they have?
