One of the most important things I’ve taken from this Toyota business is the clearest evidence, for some time, of the long term commitment. Also, one wonders, what real evidence is emerging that this ain’t going away for the foreseeable future. The solution we have is the best in class and given time, could provide the standard LFT ingredient world wide for many years to come.
Once we are underway, growth of sales should be quite dramatic and most importantly sustained. Decent multiples should apply.
ManufactureERS as PL says. But if you're right and they are all heading for Surescreen then maybe its only Surescreen that has a problem/
Bella6532m -
IMO What Toyota don't know about Robotics isn't worth knowing.
I imagine Toyota might have a few spare vehicles knocking about that can take their engineers beyond the Derbyshire border.
Plural. LFD manufacturers. Surescreen will probably be one of them
I can’t see them sending an army of engineers in just to help surescreen... it says LFT manufacturers. It’ll be all the usual suspects, they’re helping install all the kit they’ve bought
Toyotas main UK base Derby,
A smaller LFT manufacturer with lower capacity based in Derby - Surescreen.
Sorry for pointing out the obvious.
'Supply of Product and Manufacturing Engineers for UK Lateral Flow Team (LFT) Upscale Project Accelerator Team'
The product is not referring to the LFT it's manufacturing equipment and engineers for the production of LFTs and this tender was awarded to Toyota.
Well it’s pretty clear to me that if you want to make some cash today you could sell out & invest in pampers. Based on the tone this morning, I can imagine their sales going through the roof today.
I’m sticking here for the big one thought.
'This contract pursues that mandate by providing critical support to LFT manufacturers to scale up their production to meet the quantities mandated by the UK government for the programme.,
And it says its been awarded.
So I assume this is just the funding to help the manufacturers scale up production...and may not yet include the actual order for product. Which could still be separate.
"Looks like the govt really is going to help build a UK (world leading) diagnostics industry."
Coughing up the £5 million quid they owe ABDX would be a good start!
Looks like the govt really is going to help build a UK (world leading) diagnostics industry.
And zero, absolutely zero chance, that they will leave the UK owned Affimer IP at the door!
For those that missed this last night…..
Therefore, ensuring surge LFT capacity, including sufficient availability of Lateral Flow Tests, is critical. 3. Mass testing of the UK Population is a key step in bringing the Pandemic under control. (Lateral Flow Tests produce quicker results than the current PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test, and do not require a lab processing step.) LFT tests have only recently become viable as a means of testing, with multiple tests being progressed through to certification and approval. This was unforeseen by the DHSC and outside its control.4. DHSC's market analysis data demonstrates that the global market for LFT is volatile and highly competitive. Global manufacturing capability is limited to circa 120m units per day. Demand often outstrips supply. DHSC requirement is driven by the progress of the pandemic (including emerging variants), the changing efficacy of available LTF products and the severity of the second wave/national R-number. That requirement means that the UK must make substantial purchases of tests during a short manufacturing window.5. DHSC has been tasked with ensuring security of supply of a critical consumable asset (Lateral Flow Antigen tests) in a volatile and competitive global market place. This contract pursues that mandate by providing critical support to LFT manufacturers to scale up their production to meet the quantities mandated by the UK government for the programme.

Again it would appear that AS is in the loop here. His recent words were 'easily 30m per month and potentially much higher with investment'. It looks as though that investment is now here
In my opinion, this is great news for UK manufacturing, AVCT, ODX, BBI, ABDX, GAD, CAR.
AVCT have repeatedly stated that the limiting factor in test production is available manufacturing capacity. The Gov have been listening.
This could also help to explain the technical plastics company, Carclo's (CAR) unexpected 15% rise yesterday on no news, they have been strongly linked with the AVCT test over the last 6 months.
It is all fitting together nicely.
GLA
Certainly encouraging re the volume they imagine for the industry. There will be many suggestions these consultants will be able to make at ABD/ODX/GAD and maybe even BBI but £1m will not stretch to production line equipment imo but only the right advice on what should be bought and oversight of installation.
Surely this is a contract to manufacture the machinery that the LFT producers need to supply the product?
@Fardistanthills and others: Truly fascinating development. UK government being very canny here:
1) Recognition that sophisticated production engineering crucial to maintaining supply of sovereign LFTs.
2) Bolster to the rather hapless Derby, who have suffered terribly with the decline of Rolls-Royce.
3) Olive-branch to Toyota, a major UK manufacturer. Provides leverage with the Japanese authorities for future Trade Deals.
4) Signals to me that UK government will back a wide platform of sovereign LFT manufacturers.
5) Could indicate export potential for UK sovereign LFTs. If manufacturing capacity is going to be the major global constraint, why not collaborate with sophisticated foreign manufacturers on licensing basis? The UK is supremely good at genetics/bio and we deserve a share of the consequent global export market for our advanced intellectual property.
Holding very firm. GLA. Keep safe.
Very interesting - clearly very UK based and yet again emphasising the need is for production capacity,
Concepts: plant engineering design, supply of product, UK lateral flow team, supply of product and manufacturing engineers for UK lateral flow team, manufacturing engineers, upscale project accelerator team, LFT
Location: United Kingdom
This is precisely the kind of approach that PA (who designed the whole sovereign diagnostic show) would adopt. Great find.
‘This contract pursues that mandate by providing critical support to LFT manufacturers to scale up their production to meet the quantities mandated by the UK government for the programme’
I’ve always wondered why they haven’t taken the same approach as they had with ventilators of getting engineering and manufacturing firms involved, but based on the above I don’t see it being a factory. If they’re after a sovereign supply I don’t see it being abroad either. It sounds like it’s to get the govt kit installed, ramped up and working smoothly asap. How much capacity they’ve bought we don’t know, but if they’re still intent on 60m or the original 120m per month then the more the merrier. Is it us? Post that on twatter...
If they’re pushing to support opening up flights to green countries with LFDs alongside everything else, they are going to need lots of tests.... the country list is due to be announced tomorrow.
Yep. I’m guessing it’s primarily to expand UK based production. But with their global reach, you have to wonder.
If there was any doubt over what the future of testing looks like...
20 engineer team for 5 months perhaps? That sort of engineer horsepower gets a LOT done.
“A market engagement exercise for DHSC was carried out at pace due to the urgent requirement and, through this engagement the Supplier was identified as being able to offer a directly relevant package of support to the selected manufacturers.”
Looks like Toyota are providing consultation services for ramping up production in multiple overseas locations. Is how I read it...
/forlorn look
“We’re going to need a bigger boat...”
My take on this (with some interpretation)… UK gov have awarded £1M to Toyota in Derby to pay for their highly experienced production / manufacturing engineers to essentially build an LFD factory to satisfy the demand for LFDs.
This is fantastic news. The Japanese invented just about every modern high efficiency manufacturing process going. They know exactly how to set up flow lines, automate, measure Takt time and Kanba, LEAN and 5S the backside out of a production facility.
Makes sense for Toyota as car production is presumably on a go slow at the moment and highly skilled engineers are available. Friend at JLR says they are running skeleton crews only.
Massive production volumes are coming!
