As TuftedDuck explained, Drax's strategy has diversified, evolving into providing renewable power as well as flexibility to the Grid through what is known as ancillary services i.e. Having the ability to respond to the Grid when the wind isn't blowing and the sun isn't shining and getting paid more for the privilege. Will G made a statement recently that even if 85% of capacity in the future is wind and solar, the other 15% will need to come from more flexible sources. Drax is targeting that 15% of the market (or a good chunk of it) and will be much cheaper than batteries/storage for a long, long time. If they can make progress on the BECCS project, they could become the first carbon negative power station in the world. Exciting times!

Hi Jane, there is no external processing on energy involved in any form of electricity generation. Electricity is generated and passes into the grid system. The press release bigs up the flexible capabilities of Shoreham. It is able to start-up, shutdown and change load to order. A fully interconnected grid system needs flexible plant to allow the grid operator to balance the system. Output from wind and solar increases and decreases as the wind blows or the sun shines, although they can be controlled to a certain extent, turning them down is foregoing "free" power. Nuclear output in this country is never reduced - these units will always generate at the max capability. Prior to the introduction of wind and solar, nukes were the only inflexible units on the system and there was always plenty of flexible plant (coal, oil, gas) for the system operator to call on to balance the system. These days flexibility is a premium "product"

I thought the Shoreham facility was involved in processing the energy from the wind farm as well? It is assumption but with the direction of renewable energies (and the amount of wind powered energy being created from the HUGE farm off the coast) this acquisition was a part of their strategy to have a mix of energy sources and overall I thought a good direction for the company (i.e. increase capacity, move away from coal etc)

You rightly mentioned ECJ intervention regarding capacity payments but, for whatever reason, ignored the heavy seller that has been depressing share price for the last 2 months. Schroders sold close to 20 mln shares and it's probably not over yet.
