IntelliSAW announces the release of an early warning partial discharge (PD) detection system

Transense Technologies plc (AIM: TRT), the provider of sensor systems for the transportation and industrial markets, is pleased to announce that its trading division, IntelliSAW, a developer of innovative real-time monitoring solutions for critical assets in electrical power applications, has today released an early warning partial discharge (PD) detection system, providing the ability to detect and report events that are indicative of both surface and internal partial discharge. Employed in conjunction with IntelliSAW's existing temperature and humidity sensing systems, the end user is afforded a comprehensive critical asset monitoring solution that delivers continuous reporting of the asset key performance indicators.

Graham Storey, Transense Group CEO, commented: "IntelliSAW continues to offer solutions which enhance the reliability of the electrical powergrid with its real-time continuous monitoring systems. The addition of partial discharge detection to IntelliSAW's existing temperature and humidity sensing system effectively extends the monitoring capability of the IntelliSAW platform to cover the primary causes of critical asset failure."

In keeping with IntelliSAW's core technology, the Company's partial discharge solution is both wireless and passive in operation, making for simple installation and configuration. The PD system's ultra-high frequency (UHF) detection scheme and advanced algorithms provide the ability to distinguish noise from actual discharges. The methods used reduce unwanted false alerts and improve reliability for PD detection even when in close proximity to cellular towers, commonly found near power substations.

The IntelliSAW Critical Asset Monitoring (CAM) platform combines PD, temperature, and humidity data to be presented locally, in addition to resident SCADA system integration with alarming functionality. The CAM platform offers real-time monitoring of the three main power assets failure modes, allowing customers to optimise performance, improve reliability, lower maintenance costs, and help avoid catastrophic failures.

About IntelliSAW

IntelliSAW, a trading division of Transense Technologies plc (AIM: TRT.L), develops and markets patent protected wireless, passive surface acoustic wave (SAW) based sensing systems targeted at challenging industrial applications. Its IS485 family of products provides temperature monitoring of critical electric power switchgear equipment in Smart Grid applications.

IntelliSAW's proprietary solution is wireless and does not require any power to the sensors, affording ease of installation and system commissioning while avoiding introducing any arcing or flashover concerns. Moreover the IntelliSAW system outputs data directly onto existing communication networks using standard protocols, allowing for instantaneous monitoring and control.

The IS485 platform brings an advanced feature set as compared to legacy solutions on the market today, including twelve independent sensor frequencies and four antenna connections per reader which combined allow for up to 48 sensors per system. Further innovative advances in interrogation protocols, differential sensor topology, and microcontroller architecture serve to resolve a number of known issues with existing solutions including sensor drop-out, challenging system set-up processes, positional dependence of sensor calibration, and non-compliance to high voltage application environments.

About Transense Technologies

Based in Oxfordshire, UK, Transense has developed patent-protected sensor systems for use in diverse high growth markets. Developed in conjunction with partners including McLaren Electronic Systems and General Motors, Transense's Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW), wireless, battery-less, sensor systems offer significant advantages over legacy wireless sensor systems. Via three wholly owned divisions, IntelliSAW, Translogik and SAWSense, Transense is targeting the high growth global electrical Smart Grid applications market, the automotive and mining industries, and torque, temperature and pressure sensing markets respectively.

Transense's sensors are also being used in the wind turbine monitoring industry. The Company is part of a consortium of nine companies ("IntelWind") that has begun development on a major EU funded project to improve the efficiency and reliability of wind turbines.

Transense's shares are admitted to trading on AIM, a market operated by the London Stock Exchange (AIM: "TRT").

Notes to Editors

A Partial Discharge is an electrical discharge or spark that bridges a small portion of the insulation between two conducting electrodes.

Partial Discharge activity can occur at any point in the insulation system, where the electric field strength exceeds the breakdown strength of that portion of the insulating material.

PD activity can occur at any point in an insulation system

Partial Discharges emit energy as:

Electromagnetic emissions, in the form of radio waves, light and heat

Acoustic emissions, in the audible and ultrasonic ranges

Ozone and oxide of nitrogen gases
