ABP Approval Granted

18 Nov 2005 07:00

TEG Environmental Plc18 November 2005 For Release 7:00 a.m 18 November 2005 TEG ENVIRONMENTAL PLC ANIMAL BY-PRODUCT APPROVAL GRANTED TO TEG'S FLAGSHIP COMPOSTING PLANT IN LANCASHIRE "This ABP approval offers TEG significant opportunities to grow revenues and to expand into new and larger markets" TEG Environmental Plc ("TEG" or "the Company"), the leading edge greentechnology company which converts organic wastes into natural organicfertiliser, is pleased to announce that it has been granted full AnimalBy-Product ("ABP") approval by the State Veterinary Service for its TEG SiloCage. This confirms that the plant is validated to process Category III ABP tothe highest UK and EU standard. The ABP approval, at the Company's original pilot waste composting plant atSherdley Farm, near Preston, which has been operational since 2000, representsthe highest classification possible in the organic waste treatment market. It allows TEG to commercialise the Sherdley Farm facility, install new largerplants and generate revenues, whilst also creating the opportunity to open uplarger markets for the company. Sherdley Farm already has planning permissionfor a new product storage facility that allows an expansion of capacity and italso has a full waste management license. Commenting, Mick Fishwick, Chief Executive of TEG Environmental, said:"Achieving ABP approval from the State Veterinary Service is a major achievementand demonstrates the outstanding capability of our composting plants. It is veryimportant that we have been able to gain independent approval for our process. This development opens up new high volume markets for TEG from the major wastemanagement companies, supermarkets and multinational food processors, who allrequire approved plants to process their waste." Under the Animal By-Product Regulations, each individual plant needs to obtainABP approval. By achieving the approval at a reference plant, the process toachieve accreditation at new plants, including those being installed at SherdleyFarm, is greatly streamlined with a reduced and simplified validation period. Sofar, only a handful of other companies have achieved full approval to processcategory III ABP in the UK. Britain introduced ABP Regulations ("ABPR") after the BSE and Foot & Mouthoutbreaks, with EU legislation following in May 2003. ABPR prevents the use ofanimal by-products in animal feed and prevents their disposal via landfill. Thisincludes previously exempt items and maintains the UK's existing ban on swillfeeding. The 1.6 million tonnes of animal by-products the UK generates each yearinclude products previously applied untreated to land, such as blood andabattoir waste and, from 31 December 2005, the opportunity will grow further asit will also include former foodstuffs that contain or have been in contact withuncooked meat products such as catering waste and supermarket food waste. Planteconomics are driven by the gate fees charged, rather than the value of the endproduct (compost). The TEG process is an economic alternative to landfill. The Silo Cage system, one of the few technologies in Europe capable of treatingthis waste, is a natural process producing compost as an end product, used as anexcellent soil conditioner that fertilises, retains moisture, provides structureand reduces the incidence of plant disease. TEG's Silo-Cages will be housed in aself-contained building, are not unsightly and are environmentally friendly. Potential customers include local authorities, waste management companies, foodprocessors, farmers and landowners. The Company's expanding market is driven byincreasingly stringent EU and UK legislation regulating the treatment anddisposal of organic waste.
