redT energy storage machines cleared for final phase of Isle of Gigha project

redT energy plc, the energy storage technology company, is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of G59 pre-testing of its 15kW-240kWh energy storage machines, currently located at the Power Networks Demonstration Centre ("PNDC") in Cumbernauld, Scotland.

The testing programme was conducted by Scottish and Southern Energy plc ("SSE") at PNDC, and focussed on the ability of the units to be safely implemented on the Isle of Gigha. Having completed this phase, redT will now begin the process of installing and commissioning the system on the island. Once installed, in-situ testing can then take place and once this stage has been completed, the 1.68MWh system can be fully commissioned on the island's grid where it will be used to manage grid constraints associated with four community owned wind turbines.

These redT energy storage machines are the first contract manufactured, containerised, large scale vanadium flow machines that have been deployed globally and this represents an important step towards cost efficient, industrial scale energy storage. Technology such as this enables the full potential of renewable energy to be unlocked at all times, using a machine that will not degrade like conventional batteries, and will last the lifetime of a wind or solar farm.

Scottish Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy Paul Wheelhouse also visited the site yesterday. During the visit, he highlighted the critical importance of industrial scale energy storage within the UK and the crucial role this technology will play in the development of a flexible, secure and low carbon energy system.

Scott McGregor, CEO, redT energy commented:

"This successful pre-testing of redT's energy storage system not only marks a significant moment in the company's development, but also for the broader industrial energy storage market. The deployment of this machine to the Isle of Gigha is ground breaking as far as it is represents the first time that contract manufacturing of a large commodity unit such as this has been successfully deployed ahead of commercial production globally. This important milestone highlights how redT is well placed to build upon its leading position in the market for large scale, long-life and robust energy storage solutions."

David Rutherford, CEO, Power Networks Demonstration Centre, said:

"Storage offers the potential to smooth out the fluctuations of renewable energy electricity production. Flow machines like the one being demonstrated by redT provide some unique characteristics for the evolving market place. In half a decade, these technologies will be embedded features of our energy market."

About The Power Networks Demonstration Centre

The Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC) was conceived by the Institute for Energy and Environment, within the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. With 200 staff and researchers, the Institute is one of the largest electrical power engineering and energy technology university research groups in Europe, with a £35m portfolio of activities. The PNDC has the support of two of the UK's leading energy companies - Scottish Power and SSE - as founding partners, as well as the support of Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Funding Council.

About redT energy

redT energy develops and supplies durable and robust energy storage machines based on proprietary vanadium redox flow technology for on and off-grid applications. The liquid storage medium affords an exceptionally long life of over 10,000 full charge/discharge cycles and a 100 per cent. usable depth of discharge. Combined with low maintenance requirements, this delivers industry leading levelised cost of storage (LCOS) and total cost of ownership (TCO) results. The modular approach allows the power and energy components of systems to be independently sized to meet customer requirements.

Until now it has not been possible to directly compare variable renewable energy generation sources with firm diesel or fossil fuel generation. PV + Storage is now reaching 'grid parity' in many countries, a paradigm shift in energy production, which will ultimately enable a distributed energy network optimising conventional and renewable generation. The redT energy system has applications in remote power, smart grids, power quality, and all aspects of renewable energy management.
