NCC Group to open .trust domain for registration

NCC Group plc (LSE: NCC, "NCC Group" or "the Group"), the international, independent provider of Escrow, Assurance and Domain Services, announces that companies will be able to submit their requests to become part of the .trust community on 16 December 2014.

NCC Group's .trust generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) has now begun a 90-day "Name Collision" and will shortly enter into a "Sunrise Period", as defined by ICANN, to protect trademarked brands.

Rob Cotton, NCC Group CEO, commented:

"After a number of months of working closely with ICANN, we are delighted that companies will be able to reserve their .trust domains with us.

"This is a key milestone in the rollout of .trust and brings us closer to making the Internet more trustworthy.

"A combination of the Internet's endemic security issues and the introduction of thousands of new TLDs over the next few years, means that trademark and brand owners need to take action to protect their online presence and interaction with their customers." 

.trust is a unique gTLD that aims to provide a safer and more secure Internet for both businesses and consumers. This extension will help protect an organisation's brand, reputation and sensitive customer information by enforcing the highest level of security and reliability.

For consumers, a .trust web address will provide a clear indication that a site is what it claims to be and is a safe place to do business, interact and share information.

Last October the Group published its .trust Technical Policy, which sets the rules and governance to measure security compliance on .trust domains.

All applicants for a .trust domain will have to verify their identity and ownership of the trademark or brand used for the domain name. They will also have to ensure their organisation is secure by complying with .trust's strict and specific code of security policies and undergo regular security monitoring to assure their infrastructure remains safe.

Next steps

Brands who wish to apply for their .trust domain during the Sunrise Period which officially opens on 16 December 2014 can contact NCC Group's dedicated Secure Registrar. All applications will then be evaluated, in line with the rules set by the .trust Acceptable Use Policy.

Sunrise Period: The Sunrise Period of domain registration is a required special period during which trademark holders may preregister domain names that are the same or similar to their trademarks in order to avoid cybersquatting. Name Collision: A name collision occurs when an attempt to resolve a name used in a private name space (e.g. used on an Intranet under a non-delegated Top-Level Domain, or a short, unqualified name) results in a query to the public Domain Name System (DNS). ICANN has made a commitment to the Internet community to launch a substantial effort to mitigate and manage name collision occurrence. As a result, each newly delegated gTLD must undergo a 90-day quiet period to ensure that all such potential collisions are detected and handled before the gTLD is opened to the general public.
