ExplorationΒ and Production Update
Melrose Resources plcΒ (LSE: MRS) ("Melrose" or "the Company"), the oil and gas exploration, development and production company,Β todayΒ announces aΒ successful exploration well offshoreΒ BulgariaΒ andΒ providesΒ anΒ updateΒ on its drillingΒ andΒ productionΒ operations.
Β
DrillingΒ Activity
Bulgaria
TheΒ Prometeu jack-up rig isΒ currently engaged inΒ drillingΒ operations onΒ theΒ Kavarna No.1Β explorationΒ well,Β which isΒ locatedΒ approximatelyΒ 7Β kmΒ to theΒ east of the Melrose-operated Galata fieldΒ gas field.
The wellΒ was drilled to total depth ofΒ 2,899Β feet andΒ encounteredΒ theΒ top of theΒ PaleoceneΒ reservoirΒ targetΒ at a depth ofΒ 2,628Β feet.Β The mud logΒ obtained while drilling established that theΒ reservoirΒ formationΒ was well developed andΒ gas bearingΒ and the initialΒ reservesΒ estimateΒ for the discoveryΒ is 24Β Bcf.
While conditioning the wellbore to run open-hole logs aΒ strong gas influxΒ occurredΒ and for safety reasons it became necessary to plug the wellΒ which will immediatelyΒ beΒ re-drilled. TheΒ incrementalΒ costs associated with theΒ remedial operations are estimatedΒ at $6Β million, the majority of which isΒ expected to beΒ recoveredΒ from insurance.
Following the completion of operations on Kavarna, theΒ PrometeuΒ rig will be used to perform an extended well test on theΒ GE3-Kaliakra No.1 discovery wellΒ announced earlier this year.Β TheΒ KaliakraΒ discoveryΒ isΒ locatedΒ approximately 15Β kmΒ to theΒ east of the Galata fieldΒ andΒ is estimated toΒ contain reservesΒ ofΒ up toΒ 47 Bcf. Β
KaliakraΒ is beingΒ developed usingΒ aΒ subseaΒ tie-back to the Galata platformΒ with first gas production scheduled forΒ the third quarterΒ 2009. Plans are also now being formulated for the development of the Kavarna discovery and first productionΒ isΒ expected in 2010.Β
Egypt
The EDC-9 drilling rig is currently completing the West Dikirnis No.7Β wellΒ asΒ the first horizontal oil producerΒ to beΒ drilled in theΒ West DikirnisΒ field. TheΒ wellΒ hasΒ reachedΒ a total depth ofΒ 11,587Β feetΒ andΒ a horizontalΒ wellboreΒ 890 feetΒ long has been drilledΒ within theΒ reservoirΒ section.Β Some operational delays have been experienced drilling the well but completion operations areΒ nowΒ ongoingΒ with a view toΒ bringing theΒ wellΒ onΒ productionΒ next month.
Β Β TheΒ West Zahayra No.2Β well has beenΒ drilledΒ usingΒ the EDC-54 rigΒ to appraiseΒ the West Zahayra No.1Β Qawasim discovery andΒ toΒ testΒ aΒ deeper Sidi SalimΒ explorationΒ target.Β The well reached a total depth ofΒ 10,532Β feetΒ and although hydrocarbon shows were evident, they were considered to be non commercial and the wellΒ has beenΒ plugged and abandoned.Β
TheΒ EDC-54Β rigΒ will now move to drillΒ theΒ East DikirnisΒ (also known asΒ North Tariff)Β exploration prospect in the El Mansoura concession which has unrisked reserves potential ofΒ 49Β BcfeΒ withΒ an estimated chance of success ofΒ 48%. The rigΒ will then be used to drill a horizontalΒ productionΒ well on theΒ Tamad oil fieldΒ where the Company sees the potential to addΒ in excess ofΒ 1.0Β MMbbls of oil reserves through further fieldΒ developmentΒ investment.
The EDC-9 rig willΒ next beΒ used to drillΒ the North Dikirnis prospect which lies in between the West Dikirnis and theΒ South ZarqaΒ fieldsΒ and has unrisked reserves ofΒ 33Β Bcfe and a chance of success ofΒ 32%.Β Β It will then drill a second horizontal well in theΒ West DikirnisΒ field.Β
United StatesΒ
InΒ East Texas,Β the Company is preparing toΒ spudΒ the RamseyΒ No.1Β wellΒ inΒ mid-NovemberΒ 2008Β toΒ test a Reklaw deep gas prospect with unrisked reserves potential of 26 Bcf and a chance of success of 50%. Subsequently, the rig will drill the NunanΒ No.1Β well which has multiple pay targets with a total unrisked reserves of 117 Bcfe and an averaged chance of success of 25%.
ProductionΒ Outlook
InΒ Egypt, the Company has completed theΒ Qantara field facilities redevelopment and the Qantara No.4 sidetrack well was brought on stream onΒ 12Β October. The well is currently flowing at aΒ condensateΒ rate ofΒ 510Β BpdΒ andΒ 3.5Β MMcfpd of gas.Β TheΒ East Abu Khadra fieldΒ developmentΒ hasΒ slippedΒ by approximately six weeks due toΒ delaysΒ experienced accessing the preferred pipeline route and the field isΒ now expected to be on stream in early-December.Β TheΒ operational delays experiencedΒ drillingΒ theΒ West DikirnisΒ No.7Β horizontal wellΒ have also resulted in a slight reduction to the West Dikirnis production forecast for this year.Β
InΒ Bulgaria,Β MelroseΒ continues to pursue theΒ GalataΒ fieldΒ gas storageΒ projectΒ andΒ in early November willΒ submitΒ theΒ commercialΒ development planΒ to the Bulgarian authoritiesΒ for approval. Pending receipt of the approval, the Company has reducedΒ theΒ GalataΒ production rate to aroundΒ 11Β MMcfpdΒ toΒ ensure sufficient gas is left in the reservoirΒ to implement theΒ projectΒ and expects to cease productionΒ from the fieldΒ at the end of thisΒ year.Β
Based on the above,Β the Company believes it is prudentΒ to reduce its 2008 netΒ entitlementΒ production guidance from 19,200 boepd to 18,300 boepd.
Commenting on the update,Β David Thomas, Chief Executive said:
"We areΒ veryΒ pleasedΒ withΒ the result of the Kavarna No.1 wellΒ whichΒ significantly de-risksΒ theΒ remainingΒ exploration potentialΒ inΒ the geologicΒ trendΒ runningΒ fromΒ GalataΒ to theΒ KaliakraΒ discoveryΒ and beyond. WeΒ look forward to seeing the results of the Kaliakra well testΒ later this yearΒ andΒ weΒ thenΒ have threeΒ additionalΒ prospectsΒ on the trendΒ identifiedΒ as potential drilling candidatesΒ in 2009 andΒ 2010.Β The regional reserves potential, coupled with the planned Galata gas storage project,Β shouldΒ add material valueΒ to the companyΒ going forward."
