Monitise extends leadership in Mobile Money marketplace with tripling in payments and transfers and registered global users over past year
Monitise showcases latest Mobile Money insights with Visa at MWC in Barcelona
Monitise plc (LSE: MONI), the leading technology and services company delivering mobile banking, payments and commerce networks worldwide, is speaking at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 in Barcelona, having tripled the value of payments and transfers over its technology platform, live transactions and registered users in the last year, reaching an all-time high for the company in each category.
The value of payments and transfers initiated via the Monitise Enterprise Platform is now more than $31bn on an annualised basis, compared with $10bn a year ago. The global Mobile Money business is handling 2bn transactions on an annualised basis, compared with 0.48bn in February 2012, underpinned by registered customers climbing to 20m from 6m in January 2012. North America is a significant market for Monitise with 10m direct registered end users.
Commenting on the uplift in payments and transfers managed by the Monitise Enterprise Platform and growing customer base, Monitise Group Chief Executive Alastair Lukies said: "Our growth over the past year is a clear indicator of the value we deliver for our clients and their customers. Monitise is joining Visa Inc. in a press briefing and partner panel discussion at MWC to showcase the next generation of mobile payments technology being developed by the world's largest consumer payments network and its partners. Visa, in collaboration with partners such as Monitise, is making Mobile Money a reality for consumers around the world, transforming the way people, bank, pay and buy.
During MWC on February 25-28, Visa will unveil the latest mobile payments and services at its exhibition stand in hall 6, stand 6E40 with a press briefing and panel event on Monday February 25 to announce new Visa mobile initiatives. The panel is being moderated by Bill Gajda, Head of Global Mobile Products for Visa Inc. and includes Jim McCarthy, Global Head of Product, Visa Inc. Joining them will be Lisa Stanton, EVP Payments, Monitise.

Innovations that Monitise is delivering as it supports Visa's mobile strategies in terms of acquiring new accounts, activating existing accounts, protecting core revenue and accelerating the move towards digital payments include:
·; Ongoing functionality enhancements to the Visa DPS Mobile Card Management Services that launched last year, for prepaid and debit issuers. DPS debit and prepaid issuers continue to adopt the specialised service, laying the foundations for mobile payments and mobile commerce solutions. Monitise developed and operates the service for DPS, the largest issuer processor of Visa transactions in the US.
·; Developing a Remote Payments Platform to bring innovative mobile payments capabilities to hybrid markets around the world. The platform technology has launched under the Movida brand in India, the second-largest mobile market in the world with more than 900m mobile subscriptions. Movida is a joint venture between Visa Inc. and Monitise, and allows registered customers to top up their mobile phones, pay bills, and purchase tickets, all via a ubiquitous user interface that works with virtually every mobile phone in the marketplace.
·; Collaboration on Visa PayWave, Visa's contactless payments application, in conjunction with the recently announced "Visa Ready Partner Program", which is available to Visa issuers globally to enable their entry and evolution of card payments to mobile payments. The solution, which has been customised for the most popular smartphones in the market, has been integrated into Visa's trusted manager service.
·; V.me, Visa's new wallet service which has been designed to take the friction out of commerce, regardless of where consumers shop. Monitise is supporting Visa's product development of V.me by creating the mobile wallet for smartphones that extends their ecommerce acceptance to mobile devices.
Beyond a long-standing relationship with both Visa Inc. and Visa Europe, Monitise works with more than 300 banks and financial institutions and an increasing array of partners positioning to adopt new mobile banking, payments and commerce services. Monitise has also recently entered a series of new partnerships with businesses such as Cognizant, CGI and on-demand ecommerce provider Venda.
