DDD licenses TriDef 2D to 3D conversion PC software to Intel

Los Angeles, California: DDD Group plc (AIM: DDD), the 3D consumer technology licensing group, announces that the licensing agreement with an unnamed PC chip manufacturer announced on 15 April 2011 is with Intel® Corporation ("Intel"). The agreement is to bundle DDD's TriDef® 3D PC conversion software products with Intel's new 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processor PC platforms.

The TriDef 3D capabilities combined with the performance of 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processors allows a broad range of popular PC games to be enjoyed by consumers without the need for additional graphics devices in their PC.

The two-year license agreement allows Intel to supply DDD's TriDef 3D Experience software with Intel's 3D PC processors directly to original equipment manufacturers ("OEM"s) and also in retail 3D accessory packs. DDD will receive quarterly royalties from Intel based on the volume of OEM and retail software products shipped. It is expected that OEMs will begin shipping the combined solution during the second half of 2011.

Chris Yewdall, Chief Executive of DDD said:

"The partnership with Intel is the culmination of many months of close collaboration with Intel's PC Client Group team and is a major milestone for DDD.

"Intel's selection of TriDef to enable significant aspects of their 3D product offering underscores the recent progress we have made in delivering a market-leading 3D content solution for the PC market."

Based on Intel's new 32nm microarchitecture, the new 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processors offer new levels of performance through optimized Intel® Turbo Boost Technology and Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology, as well as significant advances in visual and 3D graphics capabilities through processor graphics. These new advances deliver new capabilities, and the performance with 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processors allows a broad range of popular PC games to be enjoyed by consumers without the need for additional graphics devices in their PC.

The agreement also includes a development contract valued at approximately £93,000 related to the initial customization of the TriDef PC software for Intel's new Core processors. Approximately £62,000 of this was recognized in 2010 as DDD completed the initial work in preparation for demonstrations at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in January this year.

By making powerful graphics capabilities part of the processor, PC manufacturers will be able to expand the range of desktop and mobile PCs that can offer stereoscopic 3D support, while also reducing cost through the elimination of separate graphics processors that have traditionally been required for playing games on PCs.

The TriDef software is fully integrated with the stereoscopic 3D support available on 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processor-based systems, which also supports 3D on the latest 3D TVs via HDMI 1.4a. Intel's 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processors are compatible with a full range of stereo 3D displays including electronic active shutter glasses, polarized glasses and the latest generation of glasses-free 3D PC displays.

Available in over 35 languages, DDD's TriDef 3D software allows over 450 of the very latest PC games to be played in stereoscopic 3D 'off the shelf', even though the game has not been specifically developed for 3D. DDD's TriDef Ignition™ 2D to 3D game conversion engine is compatible with DirectX 9, 10 and 11 games. Its unique high-performance stereoscopic 3D render mode enables 3D gaming on Intel's 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processors with no significant compromise in performance.

Intel and DDD plan to promote the TriDef stereoscopic 3D game engine to game developers for both current and future games. A growing number of popular PC games are already compatible with the new Intel processors.

In addition to a wide variety of PC games, DDD's TriDef Media Player automatically converts PC media and photo files from 2D to 3D along with DVD movies. Intel and DDD plan to integrate the TriDef stereoscopic 3D software more closely with the media functions of the 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processors to facilitate access to DDD's 2D to 3D conversion by third party software developers.

Intel also plans to offer a selection of original 3D movie trailers drawn from the growing library of high definition 3D movies available on DDD's Yabazam! website, rounding out their comprehensive 3D offering for OEMs and end users alike. The companies also plan to enable the TriDef software to operate more closely with Intel's on-chip high definition video decoders with a view to offering premium 3D content to Yabazam visitors.

In addition, the companies plan to explore opportunities for the use of DDD's 2D to 3D conversion with Intel's other processor families.

About DDD Group

DDD, also known as Dynamic Digital Depth, is transforming the viewing experience with applications for 3D displays. Its patented technologies enable: 3D viewing with and without glasses; simple integration of computer games applications with 3D displays; supply of 3D content through 2D to 3D conversion; and 3D transmission over existing networks. DDD's shares are quoted on the London Stock Exchange's AIM Market (AIM: DDD).

Technology background

A new category of flat screen LCD and plasma displays is now available from major consumer electronics companies that provides stereoscopic 3D images both with and without the need for the viewer to wear glasses. Stereoscopic 3D images appear to have natural in and off-screen depth. 3D displays can now be found in desktop PC monitors, notebook computers, and HDTVs worldwide and have also been included in mobile phones in Japan and Korea.

DDD's solutions provide an important bridge between conventional two-dimensional (2D) software applications and content and the new 3D displays. Normal 2D pictures, video and computer graphics images are manipulated by DDD's patented technologies enabling them to be displayed on 3D displays without requiring the content to be created especially for a 3D display. DDD's solutions also enable automatic conversion of virtually any media from 2D to 3D without any pre-processing of the 2D image.

DDD licenses these technologies, marketed under the TriDef® brand, to consumer electronics manufacturers for inclusion with the 3D display products supplied to their end users. DDD also licenses its TriDef software directly to end users who already own 3D PCs and through an international sales channel. DDD's customers include: Intel Corporation, LG Electronics, Samsung, HP, Acer, Fujitsu, Lenovo, Sharp, Wistron Corporation and Arisawa Manufacturing Company.
