European Innovation Award

16 Jan 2007 07:00

Zenergy Power PLC16 January 2007 Embargoed Release: 07:00hrs Tuesday 16th January 2007 Zenergy Power plc ('Zenergy' or the 'Group') Frost & Sullivan Product Innovation of the Year Zenergy Power plc (AIM:ZEN.L), the specialist manufacturer and developer ofcommercial applications for superconductive materials, is pleased to announcethat it has been chosen as the overall winner of the 2006 Frost & SullivanEuropean Product Innovation of the Year Award for its research and developmentwork in the field of high-temperature superconductors ('HTS'). The prestigiousaward has been gained by the Group in recognition of its innovative, advancedsecond generation HTS wires ('2G wires') for electric power and magnetapplications. The Board considers this to be of particular significance at atime when the Group is gaining commercial traction for these applications withinthe field of renewable energy production. Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Kasturi Nadkarny, commented: "With a view towards reducing equipment transportation and installation costs, wind turbine producers are constantly looking for lighter, cheaper and moreefficient component materials and devices. In this context, Zenergy'slightweight, highly conductive 2G wires are emerging at the forefront." The Group's HTS wires have 100X the current density of traditional copper wires.Due to their high-performance characteristics and superior efficiency levelsthey are gaining widespread appeal in key application areas such as renewableenergy production and energy intensive industrial processes. Within the metals industry conventional induction heaters are associated withhigh power losses owing to the inefficiency of the materials used. As Zenergy'sHTS wires do not offer any resistance to the flow of electricity at lowtemperatures and do not generate heat, they halve the operating costs ofinduction heaters, significantly reducing the overall cost of industrial metalsproduction and greatly reducing carbon emissions. Zenergy has pioneered two classes of HTS wires. To date, industrial productionrelies on the current generation of HTS wire ('1G wire'). The wires are in theform of multifilaments and possess reinforcements in order to meet the varyingdemands of industrial applications. The superconductor ceramic is made ofbismuth-strontium-copper-calcium oxide which enables it to achieve a very highcurrent density. Ms. Nadkarny, Frost & Sullivan added: "In order to lower production costs, a second generation of HTS wire ('2G wire')is being developed by the company, based on the same class of materials butmanufactured using thin film technology in an all chemical deposition process. The materials used for the manufacture of 2G wire employ yttrium-barium-copperoxide which allows for manufacturing costs to be considerably reduced whencompared to 1G wire and have the potential to lower the costs of HTS beneaththat of copper." Because of its inherent characteristics, 2G wire is expected to be able toprovide the robustness critical for industrial processes, significantly lowerthe loss of current density during inert stabilisation and to be capable of massproduction for large scale applications. The Frost & Sullivan Product Innovation Award is presented to a company that hasdemonstrated excellence in new products and technologies within its industry. The recipient company has shown innovation by launching a broad line of emergingproducts and technologies. -Ends- About Zenergy Group Plc Zenergy Power plc is a global specialist manufacturer and developer ofcommercial applications for superconductive materials. Comprising threeoperating subsidiaries located in Germany (Trithor), USA (SC Power Systems) andAustralia (Australian Superconductors), the Group is developing a number ofenergy efficient applications to be adopted in renewable energy production, energy distribution and large scale, energy intensive industrial processes. Mostnotably, the Group was recently selected by E.ON AG to provide the HTStechnology for the world's first superconductor hydroelectric power generatorcapable of delivering energy efficiency levels of greater than 98%. The groundbreaking project is establishing the way in which the Group's products cansubstantially improve the economic return on the production of renewable energyand is partially funded by the European Union.
