International Maritime law does allow you to defend yourself against boarding - like the fire hose and sonic defences used by ships against the Somali Pirates.
We spend as much time on the Rig/Platform as we do at home, and would I welcome any intruder into my home with food and warm blankets?
Absolutely not.
Glued your hands to the deck? Fine stay there, and hope that the rig crews don't **** on you on their way past.
Feel cold? You should have worn warm clothing.
Want food? Sorry, I only have enough for the rig personnel, but I'll put their leftovers on a plate a couple of metres away from you.
Want water? Sorry, as part of our environmental push, we've banned plastic water bottles and so have no method of getting water to you. Yes, the rig crew have their own personal stainless steel bottles - let me see if one of them wants to let you drink from it...
Want to go to the toilet? Go right ahead where you are - I'm not stopping you, though to meet our HSE Policies I will have to use water hoses and detergent to disinfect the deck immediately afterwards.
What happens in the extremely unlikely event of an emergency? We all head for the lifeboats - what you do is up to you.
A few years ago, Greenpeace harassed a Russian Rig in Arctic waters. Within a few hours the Russian Navy was there and arrested them all at gunpoint. The Greenpeace ship was impounded and the activists & ships crew were all thrown in a Russian jail for a few days.
Greenpeace don't mess with the Russians any more.
And, BTW, where were Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth etc when the Chinese were destroying Coral Reefs to build illegal bases in the Spratly Islands, in International waters between Vietnam, Malaysia and The Philippines?
