Sky continuing it's tradition of innovation. If this doesn't pay off, their next idea will. Unlike BT.. I remember a friend who worked for them claim excitedly they have plans for a 4g backup solution to their routers. This was 7 years ago.. only now they're willing it out, and it's a physically separate device, which isn't even that useful anymore with unlimited data plans and 5g on a lot of phones.

Loving the new SKY innovation of a 4G back up in case the landline broadband goes down advertised on TV tonight… I mean they must have really racked their brains on that one lol or did they just plagiarise the BT EE ploy…

Oh and there’s a very good reason you don’t have the mobile back up in the router ….. what’s the point if it’s the power source that fails in the transformer or the inner workings of the router? Then both would be off… maybe just maybe BT thought of that already :))

But new news is Saudi Arabia now want to muscle in on getting PL TV rights for Britain Europe and the Middle East taking not just BT out but SKY and BeiN too….

True but BT still own everything that runs the network it’s too complicated to say they can just sell it and BT will never just sell it imo….

10 years ago when Murdoch and White were pushing for OR to be sold off BT built an alternative workforce called mobile and TV… a totally separate workforce doing the same as OR services delivery…. Thousands of ex army navy etc and others …. Only once the threats of OR being separated from BT rescinded then BT and OR combined them… imo had OR been separated then BT would have sold OR as a maintenance company contracted to install and maintain etc on their the BT owned copper and fibre network and still left BT with a wholly owned engineering workforce running along side…

BT always think the long game and this fibre roll out and equinox has flummoxed them again.

To me the market is trying to hurt BT right now because the market cartel inc GS are investing in altnets left right and centre and the obvious point of attack is BT…the big driver being OFCOM decision not to interfere with OR pricing for 10 years and to leave copper SLGs at 18-19 levels until 2026… that’s a huge advantage for OR/BT..

Also BTPS recently reported that the deficit had recently reduced significantly anyway:

Definitely fleccy… the latest pension reports are very encouraging…. I reckon in 6 years it’ll be zero deficit… the payments will be increased circa cost benefits but it’s another stick of grass to beat BT with… sounds awful but it actually doesn’t hurt in the slightest imo

Plus for added measure and one the hedge funds and institutions who spout ball****s are forgetting is that once the fibre is rolled out then there is at today’s prices Circa £30 Billion of copper cable lying redundant in the network and as I previously posted BT have already employed outside contractors to identify and recover once FTTP is completed in that exchange area…. The hidden fortune…. It’s all priced in to BT senior management plan.

Not sure why OR would be worth £20 billion as all they are is a workforce in reality… BT owns the network and OR have no real assets..

There is serious competition gathering pace with foreign finance, and BT could lose Sky as a customer..

To who exactly? No one has a sufficiently big enough network to take their customers and lest ye forget TV is SKYs USP, not broadband. Why would Sky take their customers and feed them via their biggest TV rivals network? Comcast didn’t get successful by helping their rivals get a commercial advantage. The deal with OR/BT project equinox will soon be signed and this trash talk of using Virgins network will be consigned to the bin, from where they were dragged from 2 years ago by the Times.

BT since privatisation has always had to make huge capex decisions due to the age, make up of the network and technology advances.

One of the biggest was 13 years ago as financial meltdown struck the world then BT decided it was the right time to upgrade the network to FTTC. They spent billions and took on about 8,000 new engineers many ex service personnel who were being made redundant. It was a huge success and under pins OR now. No other British company had such foresight at that time.

All the providers were LLU blind thinking they’d outwitted BT wholesale LLU was the thing but BT were already years ahead with FTTC.

Now all the LLU kit in exchanges lies redundant ready to be ripped out. It’s cost the non BT providers billions to install run and now de-install.

BT waited for Virgin project Lighting.. £3 billion upgrade… they started it and half way through BT announced full FTTP lol again blind siding the opposition. It was a waste of time and £3 billion. Now they’ve to upgrade that to full fibre lol….

BT plays the long game… it might not fit every investment but those with a long game it’s aligned.

FP… I agree that there has been a political strait jacket on BT but to get FTTP roll out finally in full flow has meant the Tory government has had to relax the fibre tax and finally get off BTs back via OFCOM.

Go back to 1990 and Maggies government blocking BT from building a game changing fibre network then it’s unbelievable that a so called pro business pro tech government denied BT a license to build it in favour of allowing US cable companies to move in and lay co ax which is not future proofed and sell TV service too so they could steal BT customers who could only offer phone services….. talk about being anti competitive ffs and BT had no choice but take it on the chin.

No other company in Britain has had to work under such circumstances than those imposed on BT. It’s ridiculous especially when BT was the first flagship for us minions owning shares…. Maybe the dye was cast back then that BT shareholders are the hoi polloi and not very sophisticated like the lying stealing bankers.

What’s that got to do with it? Have you been on site? I don’t think you have or you wouldn’t have such a low opinion. There are lots of tech startups that have a few employees but they get assistance from BT R&D teams who are best in class in helping their projects to succeed.

Most of the signalling systems used in modern comms were developed at Adastral including perfecting single mode fibre which is now so common. You do BT a disservice with your comment, pity you didn’t do your research first lol… here, I’ll start you off…

Been thinking maybe over thinking today, but the OFCOM decision clearly upset VM02 amongst others.. it’s feasible that they leaked (paid for) the article saying SKY are considering moving en masse to Virgin fibre as a sabre rattle to BT… now Jansen says he’s already discussed with Drahi and DT about lowering wholesale prices even further if necessary after OFCOM say they won’t intervene until 2031…. It’s all a bit tit for tat stay in your box Virgin. Their future model will still involve TV and BT’s won’t. BT can concentrate on core network and drive their costs right down once the FTTP roll out is complete. That will coincide with the pension balanced and an engineering workforce cut to single digit thousands rather than the close to 40,000 as well as contractors right now… equinox deal guarantees payback for the current investment too. Pity I’m nearly a pensioner as long term BT is a gold mine of its own making.

I do believe that BT's share price will turn upwards again in the near future, but I don't think the Times article will do it.

Fleccy, a lot of the smaller altnets are wholesaling an Ethernet connection off OR to a powered cabinet in a location then aggregating that out to multiple premises via OR ducts etc. These ones imo could be easily integrated back into the OR network.

Agree Larry, my cousin is on the BT emergency response team… he’s been all over the world getting comms back up after natural disasters. BT don’t make a song and dance about it. I noticed today about the 888 app and all the women’s groups were saying well why should women take the responsibility to use it etc it should be that the male perpetrators are stopped before they do it… which is of course fecking stupid as if they could be stopped before they do it and we had the tech to do that then they would be…my guess is a man in P Jansen suggested it so that’s a minus straight away instead of seeing it as a tool to help get safer streets and situations etc…

I’ve always thought that BT don’t really market their strengths properly to the mainstream and like you I don’t just mean BB products but the whole labyrinth under its watch.

Has done more in 12 months for the poorest families of every creed race denomination and in every village town and county in the country than the politicians have done in 25 years … let that sink in… a poor black lad from Wythenshawe who grew up on the benefit state…. Ask yourself have you done more to help the starving kids in your area your street your neighbours? Why not? Don’t criticise if you just can’t see it, because it’s there. Plonkers.
