It’s this lack of diligence that is annoying me, Openreach doesn’t own the network ffs BT does. Openreach Ltd is the workforce and non network assets only. The broadband is supplied by BT on the BT network underground, overhead and in between and Openreach Ltd maintain it for BT. Openreach is basically a contractor to BT albeit wholly owned by them.

Once the fibre is in its debatable wether BT may then spin off Openreach with a long contract to carry on its business or tender to the many other contractors that they currently use. But I very much doubt but will be spun off until the fibre build is completed as BT won’t want to be shelling out circa 15 billion to contract companies not under their direct control as is the case with OR where they have that ability imo.

Lazy journalism imo… the cost cutting was forecast long before Drahi got involved.

It’s no secret that 2/3rds of the Openreach workforce will go in the next 10 years along with all the fibre planning and organisational teams involved… add in switching and transmission and exchange employees then the 4600 exchanges closing and then the recovery of the copper in the ground that no analysts are taking into account it’s almost like they’re inexperienced kids making these predictions…. Oh wait….

That’s exactly what they are… they don’t have a clue about BT and the muscle behind it. Forget Drahi, he’s a carpet bagger there will be no takeover, no Openreach sell off.

BT are entering a phase of restructuring obviously but one where the last 100 years of metallic and electrical signalling is replaced by glass and light and eventually reap the rewards of a highly efficient network, the one they asked permission for in the early 90s but were refused a license for by Maggies pro business pro technology government in favour of bringing in American cable TV competition… palms greased obviously lol..

Not publicly that I have seen. Advised by someone who works for BT. I actually thought the RNS was about it, but I reckon they will release the news with the next results. I believe it’s genuine information though and very good news.

It seems the 3 biggest providers have signed up to equinox along with others. BT SKY TalkTalk I presume. So the article about Sky switching to V was indeed just a rehash of a story from 2 years ago to rattle shareholders.

Seeing this price for a takeover of BT lol get real that wouldn’t get you Openreach on its own…

Drahi’s Altice only turns over about £4 billion even less than Openreach.

It’s a cheap skate opportunist trying to muscle in but maybe quadruple your offer and it might be worth thinking about..

I hope that no one trips up over that and makes a claim was my initial thought.

Nige you could raise it as a fault on openreach website giving the location and someone will go out and put it right immediately as it’s a safety issue.

Yes Terra it is all owned by BT and maintained by OR… However PIA fees are paid to OR not BT.

OR legally have to maintain the ducting network and provide extra capacity if required at their expense not the altnets.

However we all know it’s an excercise of smoke and mirrors lol and it’s really BT all along but don’t let OFCOM know that we know…

That with the cost of ground work, permits, traffic lights, materials etc is all down to BT. Said it before, the worlds gone mad…

Yes mate as it stands… don’t forget the other providers have been crying for PIA for a decade but still weren’t happy and then cried for free access but post Sharon White OFCOM imposed cheaper rental prices but definitely not free lol

NDN… Openreach pay for it. Openreach charges the altnets for infrastructure usage, be it ducts or poles…And when altnets damage existing cabling they pay for that damage.

The only advantage altnets have over Openreach when installing the fibre is their ability to get it in the ground and up poles without the safety safeguards OR employees have to use…

Fully agree Fleccy… May I also add that wetherboys comment about competition is valid, but further investigation shows that Jansen has stated recently that BT has the permission of major stakeholders to make even further price cuts to equinox in order to ensure BT/OR remain competitive. I take that to mean drive the small altnets into extinction. I’m sure we have actually discussed this a few weeks ago.

The altnets have raised 15 billion via hedge funds and banks and will want big returns whereas the 15 billion BT are using is their own profits… big difference as pretty woman would say huge difference.

Then factor in the cost savings on workforce, buildings, power and copper recovery then BT have advantages no other supplier could dream of.

Terra I know that customers don’t just switch on to the FTTP network of course those of us in comms realise you need to install the fibre to the customer hence the name FTTP lol… whilst on that list there are some small exchanges I agree, but also larger ones on there too, it’s a mix but that’s only 450 exchanges listed so far but that 450 exchanges is 1/10th of those closing so still another 4000 to go…. However that 450 accounts for 4.5 million customers that will be able to switch to fibre… OR now say they can build 5 million connections a year so that will rise quite quickly. The 2025 date is set in stone. Some SPs have already stopped selling electronic dial tone and are using a VoIP service by plugging your phone direct into the router via the SOGEA product.

A bit disingenuous there Terra lad, The article is about stop selling of copper products not closing the exchange. The fact that stop sell is happening in an exchange are means that at least 75% of that area now has access to the FTTP product that’s all and that from the stop sell date then providers have to migrate new and upgraded customers on to the fibre only network.

Exchanges will remain open until the PSTN switch off in 2025 and after that the large processing exchanges will switch off and the concentrators everywhere will lay dormant.

The list that Fleccy just put up will be the latest 79 to stop sell along with the other 376 or so that have already been announced so 450 in total. That means those 450 listed will all have been upgraded to FTTP or at least 75% of it will. Cheers.

It's one thing passing a premise, it's another signing up customers, many of whom will be tied into contracts with their current ISP.

That’s a very good point and one which OR analysts will have the data for too, they’ll know exactly how long a customer has been with a certain ISP wether through new installation or upgrade… that’s like knowing the enemies battle plans …

I know someone who lives in Bolton and CF had gone through the OR copper cable 3 times in a distance of about 150 metres the whole street were cut off until OR rocked up and fixed it overnight including civils I imagine it’s an ongoing problem as altnets are working on price contracts not salaries in most cases..

I agree, but what I don't understand is why the story was aimed at BT, and made no mention of the implications for the Vodafone MVNO partnership, signed in Nov 2019. The fact there was no mention of the MVNO tells its own story imo.

Also to add the spine of the FTTP network is already in all over the country as spare fibres go from headend in the exchange to every super fast and Gfast cabinet on the street corners and can be used. These dark fibres constitute a large part of the build already in place.

Fleccy you say you live in the Bolton area and CF are there now installing, I believe there’s a gentleman agreement not to overlay while work is still ongoing and it’s planned with OR and the altnets. We can’t have vans of 3 companies in the same area using the same boxes ducts and poles at the same time lol can you imagine the raucous between them all fighting to get their kit in lol…

Maybe if some of authors of these pieces actually sat down and looked at the cost savings of 20,000 engineers gone also 4,600 exchanges closed with all the maintenance and power and a hundred years of investment in the copper network taken out and sold then it might give them food for thought.

BT have every right to be scared about impartiality, it was the very cornerstone of all the other providers arguments to get OR totally separated from BT Group….
