For those not on LinkedIn:
“ A few changes are happening around HQ at THG.
Since promoting Konrad Hill to Chief People Officer last year, his team has been making big changes. It's certainly not been an easy gig - the phrase drinking from a fire hose springs to mind 😁
First of all, they helped THG tackle rabid inflation by using staff attrition to deliver headcount reductions across the Group. As people left, talent and teams were mixed up across thousands of people. For many, promotions and career changes have been both life changing and daunting. At the same time as making these major changes, we've been balancing driving the Group forwards.
Mindful of the impacts these changes have, the People Team has also worked hard at making THG an exciting place to work, improving the experience wherever possible.
This week saw the latest project delivered - a new on-site shop at HQ 🛍️
Returns are a big cost to online businesses. THG is lucky to only have c1%-2% returns across the Group, compared to 10% to 40% for most business models. Low returns was one of the key reasons behind the decision to move into the Nutrition and Beauty well over a decade ago. I cant begin to say how important this is for online business models. It's super hard to scale a business if your handling returns almost as fast as taking new orders.
The original idea behind the HQ shop was to allow staff to buy some of the returned products that cant go back into stock. This stock is typically sold to clearance outlets at heavily discounted prices.
One meeting room and a bit of boring corridor space later (see pic in comments), and the THG Studios team have built the new store. Now, while walking to the ground floor subsidised restaurant, thousands of staff at HQ campus can grab a haircut, visit the GP, chat with a life coach, and then take up some retail therapy for pennies 😂 Decent work if you can get it...
As well as showcasing our brands, launching new products, and hosting internal events, the store will also form a small part of our Social Impact strategy. THG donates any profits from the product sales to local community initiatives.
I bloody love this stuff. Most of what we do each day is like a computer game, taking on competitors all over the world through laptops and Teams calls. Sure, there's huge complexity going on in the background, across various sites - not least our global major manufacturing sites responding to customer behaviours following decisions taken on computers.
But initiatives like this from our People and Studio Teams help everyone at the campus get a small glimpse into the real life impact of their daily computer based decisions. While at the same time getting a ridiculous bargain.....”
