Illusion, The person placing the spreadbet doesn't own the shares but the spreadbetting company does. They buy the shares to cover the spreadbet. If you had bet on COPL at 0.04p to go long then you would have done well when the SP rose to 0.59p a few months later. If you have used up your £20k ISA allowance then spreadbetting long is another good way of getting tax free profits.
