A James sounds all very clever but the weather pattern over the UK in my lifetime has changed significantly and at an unprecedented rate not seen in the past so all this horlicks about clever clever Pacific water columns is just that. Do you really believe that statistics arrived at before satellite measurements became available could be of use in looking back over hundreds or thousands of years. There were no stats available that were accurate. Sea temperature measurements were aquired on sea routes by a crew member chucking a bucket over the side, perhaps in a storm or making them up, and recording it. Until we have at least 100 years of accurate satellite date atmospheric warming or cooling cannot be conclusively proved, let alone ocean currents on the seabed of which there is little information. Either way it stands to reason that global activity has to have an effect on global temperatures, just common sense. It is the rate of changes which are unprecedented not the changes.
