A fair amount of the problems with the outflows must be linked to the pandemic corona virous, and the impact on investor confidence. The market is not reflecting this fully yet . It depends to a fair degree on the after shocks that might follow, and the length of shadow it casts over the worlds economies. You only need to see the impact on the travel and holiday industries , along with the retail trade.. But there are some winners in this, and they should emerge from the war zone In good nic. And no doubt some others use the situation to hide various failings, by the clever use of accounting etc.
The reasons for POGs drop today was largely because gold had come of its peak and market sentiment had the spare cash bpys chasing the depressed shares market... looking for some bargains. Gold apparently eased due to dollar rising expectations. It is expected that stimulus measures are needed to boost economic growth in the US markets (or stop it crashing in election year). Macro economic factors are behind the need for stimulus measures, it is said.
So, give it a few days to calm down, and perhaps get some profit taking and lets see where gold goes from. If it stays anywhere near current levels, POG should do ok regardless of who the chief is. I hope no-body has had a hand in the till. Who knows.
Shame also about the demise of Shearings coach tour operators a few months back. Pity that some form of lifeline was not available to them.. they`d been a good company for years admittedly running on a tight budget, but non the less they didn't deserve to be cast to the wolves. Could First Grp step in with some kind of rescue package to help this business back into action. Even though its as tough market it could fit well with First Group., and add a useful string to the bow. The holiday potential in this country is terrific, if only the right funds could be directed to this vital part of our economy.
thanks kenj, I recall you from another bb possibly the iii bb, going back a while. I was `checkers`, also possibly on the Motley Fool bb
I see there is a good article in todays MAIL ON Sunday. see the financial pages for the one
page spread.. Incidentally, it does say there that there might be a couple of bidders for POG waiting in the wings. Also, I get the message about the dodgy jokers playing around with the business. Yes, I agree that the shareholders need to get voting here , but I also think that the regulators need to act here to make sure the company is being run by credible people. And also to ensure the shareholders are being protected from any potential fraudsters.
Talking of cheap takeovers...…..does POG rate as a junior mining stock. If so, could they not team up with say Highlands gold to make a bigger unit.. or is Highland too far removed from the east Russian borders..
I read an article about 3 junior rated Gold miners , saying that they are now bombing along, thanks to the rise in gold prices, with projections for gold to perhaps double again in the coming couple of years or so, specially if world economies kept on crashing under the various troubles like the corona epidemic, and the trouble between US and China, and the upcoming US elections, not to mention the impact of the Brexit debacle. Should keep the pot boiling for a while yet, and with POG now looking much better placed, and backed by a strong gold price, they would appear to be well placed to return to more profitable days of old
Sorry, I meant Watchstone.
However, I`m also interested to hear what people think are the prospects for Watchstone , going forward, particularly in light of the next generation of electric cars with auto-pilot controls ,etc.. which are due to hit the roads in a couple of years.
As regards the Eskew account this money has been sitting in all these years.. will it have been gathering any interest? If so should that be added to the money received from the court hearings. Or will it just go into the kitty of Waterstones, in the accounts eventually become a small contribution to the business. I ask this because presumably, if Waterstones had lost in court, the prosecution would have awarded the money plus interest to the plaintiffs? Since we are talking about ?millions here, gathering compound interest for several years. we could be talking about a fair amount of cash .. just sitting gathering dust? Any thoughts on future prospects for this business.. and potential valuations? I see that Credit Swiiss have taken there profits and pulled out recently. ?? Who else are amongst the major shareholders/stakholders?
