amazing paper. 40-60% of population that have NOT had SARS-CoV-2 already have activated T Cells to the virus! likely due to cross-reactivity w/ other "common cold coronaviruses". may explain large % having easy time clearing virus and/or mild/no symptoms."

Our foundation—both through our own funding and through CEPI—has been supporting the development of an RNA vaccine platform for nearly a decade. We were planning to use it to make vaccines for diseases that affect the poor like malaria, but now it’s looking like one of the most promising options for COVID. The first candidate to start human trials was an RNA vaccine created by a company called Moderna.

Here’s how an RNA vaccine works: rather than injecting a pathogen’s antigen into your body, you instead give the body the genetic code needed to produce that antigen itself. When the antigens appear on the outside of your cells, your immune system attacks them—and learns how to defeat future intruders in the process. You essentially turn your body into its own vaccine manufacturing unit.

Because RNA vaccines let your body do most of the work, they don’t require much material. That makes them much faster to manufacture. There’s a catch, though: we don’t know for sure yet if RNA is a viable platform for vaccines. Since COVID would be the first RNA vaccine out of the gate, we have to prove both that the platform itself works and that it creates immunity. It’s a bit like building your computer system and your first piece of software at the same time.

Even if an RNA vaccine continues to show promise, we still must continue pursuing the other options. We don’t know yet what the COVID-19 vaccine will look like. Until we do, we have to go full steam ahead on as many approaches as possible.

Just to add...If i can try and be impartial and forget Im an investor in Scancell, I do still think the goverments approach is wrong i.e. they "appear" (to me) to be not considering the alternatives to Oxford vaccines well enough*. And as citizens we would want our governments to consider all the potential solutions rather than latch on to one.
But again thats just my opinion...and what the hell do i know.

*disclaimer - guess none of us don't know whats going on in the background in terms of discussions/funding with other bios like Scancell

Bighmam! Errr...Bingham even :/

It was my somewhat ranty post about Kate Bighmam, the focus towards Oxford etc, it was made from a somewhat ill -informed view point if im honest (in hindsight perhaps I probably shouldnt have posted it!), and i'll hold my hand up that im nowhere near as clued up as many of the posters here when it comes to the side of the science, trading, the business agreements, biotech links, academia links, government contracts etc etc

Whilst I still think there is a lack of impartiality from the goverment, bermudas reply to me was fair and well explained, so I could then see why the government seem to be hedging with their "safest" bet (i.e. Oxford)

Inan, i totally see where you are coming from, and I can see bermudas argument too. Yourself and bermuda are some of the more knowledgable posters here so IMO I do think it's worth keeping the discussions civil but still lively...we need to keep all our knowledgeable posters IMO, that way we all learn... Healthy debate rather than Mrs Merton style heated debate! Again, all in my very honest (limited) opinion.

With that context it makes a lot more sense RE the Oxford University "bias" - for want of a better word.

My point was, is that if you listen to Alok Sharma Sunday breifing it feels like the emphasis is 95% Oxford, and the remaing scraps for everyone else? Or maybe i've mis-iterpreted that?

Because IMO, the government should be continually and "impartially" looking for the "best" vaccine candidate, would you agree? And maybe throwing the odd million/half a million to the likes of Scancell/other UK vaccine developers just to get things in motion. After all havent they already commited £80 odd miillion to Oxford?

As crumbs said "All we need is some chump change chucked our way for a trial."

In the context of the money the government has ploughed into Oxford already it seems odd (to me) the likes of Scancell have yet to see a penny off the government...but maybe I'm just being very impatient!

Despite my obvious bias to Scancell, the government approach to finding a vaccine reeks of lack of impartiality.
Scancells vaccine on paper could/should be a stonger candidate than the Oxford one right? And the recent findings are showing the Oxford may not actually be that effective anyway.
Sounds like the typically corrupt goverment approach to all projects...you scratch my back I'll scratch yours...favours for friends etc...IMO
You can bet the HS2 project is rife with similar indirect "backhanders"...................IMO
