In lockdown here in sunny wales, so lots of reading and thinking time!
We seem to have a lot of posts about Remdesivir and how effective it is. Lamenting the fact that it has received approval, albeit with a good dose of political pressure.
We have a lot of posts knocking the lack of uk governmental help in pushing SNG and being very disparaging over our politlcal response to Covid.
OK.
1) First off my rant! I’d hate to be in a position having to make the big political decisions over this. Trying to weigh up all the options with all the conflicting information along with politics pulling you in all sorts of directions. Horrible. Please cut them a little slack, I may not agree with every decision that has been made, but I do recognise the position that we ask them to perform in on our behalf. Not easy.
2) Have a thought over what has been achieved. Covid hit our shores as the beginning of this year. Yes, this year! The team at SNG has performed a miracle, quite frankly. They made a quick pivot from COPD and threw everything at Covid. We have impressive (although a small sample) results from our initial trial. We are now fully funded into a stage III trial, we have a MAP in place and running, we have an At Home trial running, and we have all the outside partners ‘on board’ to get this drug to where it is needed as soon as we can (manufacturing, distribution etc…).
This is has all been done in less than a year! Wow, impressive. My hat well and truly doffed to all our wonderful team at SNG.
3) Politics. I am sure you all hold differing views, I respect that and there is no easy answers. I did my rant above, sorry.
Now, I don’t see much benefit in the various plans to have a go at the politicians, asking questions over how/why the governmet hasn’t put rescource behind SNG. To me this is a negative, puts the target immediately on the defensive. I think it is counter productive.
I would advocate selling SNG and it’s benefits. It is better than Remdesivir, it is (or very soon will be) in a properly managed stage III trial, it works well alongside steroids (proven, I believe), It can be used early to help reduce the need for hospitalisations (producing an overall reduction in both cost and resource), It shouild work for other viruses as well (invaluable when dealing with Flu and Covid together), and more, and more. Sending this type of message to politicians may well get a more favourable response, it can also go to a wider audience – anyone involved in hospitals/medical/pharmacy etc.
Sorry for the long post, just too much lockdown time to fill here….
