If your position is under trheat, as was the military junta in Argentina, start a war in an attempt to get the support of the country behind you. When the autocrat Lukeshenko was under threat from a popular protest by the people he sought assistance from Putin. Putin was quick to offer his support fearing that, if Russians were allowed to witness that it was possible to overthrow a despot, it might threaten his own position. This ridiculous war, IMO, is merely a front to gather support from the people for 2 tyrants.. If Putin had to lead from the front, riding on the first tank to cross the border he might have been less keen to instigate a war.
