Last two meetings..........
Newly signed pacts between China and Timor-Leste amount to a comprehensive strategic partnership and fulfil the young island nation’s aim of strengthening ties with major economies, reports Reuters.
According to the Chinese foreign ministry, President Xi Jinping and Timorese Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão met over the weekend in Hangzhou, China, ahead of the opening ceremony of the Asian Games. Agreements signed between the two cover an expansion of bilateral investment, potential joint exploration for OIL and GAS
The two will also be cooperating in economic areas such as food sufficiency, industrial revitalisation and Beijing’s signature Belt and Road initiative. The oil and gas agreement comes at a particularly welcome time for Timor-Leste, since the Bayu Undan oil and gas field, the main source of revenue for the country, stopped producing gas last year.
Timorese Foreign Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas met with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, during an official visit to China last week, the Lusa news agency reports. China “made a commitment” to support economic development in the island nation, with special emphasis on the infrastructural, agricultural and industrial sectors
Timor-Leste signed onto the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China’s premiere foreign policy programme, in 2022, and a year later the two countries made “a historic leap forward” in bilateral relations by elevating their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Freitas said his country looked forward to working with China to enhance high level exchanges and promote more projects under the BRI.
With Chinese Ministry reporting
Noting that China will always be a member of the developing world, Wang said its development will provide support and opportunities for all developing countries, including Timor-Leste. China is ready to establish an agricultural cooperation working group with Timor-Leste, deepen sub-national exchanges, participate in infrastructure CONSTRUCTION in Timor-Leste👍
