The two studies cited critically on this have both been small studies. The Guardian called the King's college study a 'longitudinal' study. We've only had the disease for less than a year so it's hardly longitudinal. Leon Feinstein did a seminal 'longitudanal' study looking at children's development in relation to socio-economic background- for 22 years. Just one example of having a journo write up research- not really their field, much as I respect the good old Guardian. Our test will capture any level of antibodies. They are using tests available from March- May- the RTC's is better on accuracy and specificity than any others- which is it's big USP alongside it's accessibility as a home testing kit.
Professor Bell has raised the question of diminishing antibodies ages ago. It doesn't reduce the value of knowing whether you had it- detecting the antibodies even at low levels. No-one in the whole world has ever had it twice. No-one has had any SARs 2 virus twice. Centenarians are doing pretty well compared to over 90 year olds- they think because there's an immune memory from the Spanish flu, protecting many of them. So the issue is not that you will get it twice in a short time but if your antibodies are diminishing what is protecting you? They think that alongside the antibodies you have a t cell response and this is what may be providing the lasting immunity. So they are looking at that. It's significant for vaccine development - it's not about reducing the value of anti-body testing. No vaccine lasts forever. If it means it's more challenging to get a vaccine- great shame for the world. Ditto if you need a booster every few months because of the implications for the developing world. More costly. It does mean we will need test and trace longer. Sentiment is going to be affected every time some-one says they have a vaccine that makes them hopeful. Which some-one has said today. Of course sentiment will be affected by that because we're all desperate for this to be over and hope is our default position emotionally. But these studies are saying ain't going to be easy to get a vaccine. That's all they are saying imo. The rest is noise.

If they have been invited to tender the week of from 15th June the deadline for completed submissions would have been/ or would be any time from around Friday 10th- unless they have extended the deadline which they said they could do on request from firms.
They will be waiting for an answer but it does look as if it's going to be an incredibly collaborative approach with the testing leads in constant communication with government and with firms. They are not adhering to compliance at all in their procurement so far. Because of the national emergency it's hardly surprising they are going to do whatever they can to support the best in class to help them plan and to support the kind of confident investment decisions we've seen from ODX to enable expansion to meet massive demand.

Public Health England as the contracting authority is putting in place a national microbiology framework agreement for diagnostics, research and development, manufacturing of supplies and services and provision of laboratory testing capacity.

This framework will be used to support all five pillars of the UK testing strategy set out by the secretary of state for health and social care. One of the aims of the framework is to maximise social value in all procurement activity as per the Social Value Act 2012.

The framework is intended to be accessed by UK Public Sector bodies including Public Health England, the Department of Health and Social Care, Public Health Wales, Public Health Scotland, NHS Authorities and Trusts, Special Health Authorities, Local Authorities and any other NHS entity or successor body. The framework can also be accessed by academic and charitable institutions.

The framework value range is an estimate only and the values may vary dependent on the requirements of Public Health England and the other authorities who may choose to participate and purchase supplies and services over the life of the framework agreement. The actual values will be to such level as those purchasing under the framework agreement consider necessary to provide suitable requirements. Public Health England works with DHSC and the NHS in its role as a national and international emergency responder to current and emerging threats to public health. As demonstrated by the Covid-19 pandemic, the exact nature, timing and escalation of such threats (and the corresponding required responses) can be difficult to foresee, making any exercise in future value estimation unpredictable.

Begs the question why didn't they buy in smaller chunks for these cheap prices? We might see more of them would be my guess.

They know what we know if we focus on the facts. There's £5billion framework being progressed through government commissioning right now for testing. We are one of a small number of potential suppliers. Duh!

I think there could be a bit of uncertainty from the Guardian report today about the King's college study. I never think journalists really make a perfect job of communicating high level research. Better if they would wait till it was per reviewed with key findings properly arrived at. I don't see any reason for concern. The implication is that it will be harder than they thought to get a vaccine. We already knew (Professor John Bell's Reach 2 study) that they have discovered a new relationship between antibodies and t cell response in supporting immunity and that though the number of antibodies may decline (our test has the highest standard of accuracy and specificity so that won't matter to understanding prevalence) the t cells will still do the work in providing immunity they think. The challenge and another line of enquiry is whether t cells are as robust for older people. There's no way testing won't be part of the strategic response worldwide. Herd immunity is dangerous nonsense. We are now going for test and track so we can isolate and protect whilst we open up.

Cheap. They have had a good look at the number of £52 million pound contracts in that government framework for £5 billion focused on diagnostics, manufacturing and component parts. A bit part ( in the overall scope and value) for research.

Has anyone had a look at it apart from me? I'm guessing all the serious investors know all about it and I strongly suspect (call me an old cynic) that the de-rampers know too! I knew it was out from the Guardian ages ago but it's certainly very warming to see the size and number of those contracts. I might go and count them. I will post the direct link myself after I have made myself a nice cuppa.
