The latest Investing Matters Podcast episode featuring Jeremy Skillington, CEO of Poolbeg Pharma has just been released. Listen here.
Kurt knows Unesco is an irrelevance, Baylan knows it is an irrelevance and most shareholders know it is an irrelevance. The question is when this is raised in Parliament and the swedish media and exposed as the stalling tactic it is ? Kurt is playing their game to reinforce BEM image as a responsible, beyond reproach company to justify the license. He is feeding Baylan every reason to justify his forthcoming decision to grant the license to mine because they all know the s***storm that Swedish eco campaigners will release. This has to the final stalling tactic in the game to my mind.
I understand your hesitation about legal action Eric but that should still allow a more aggressive media campaign to highlight the hypocrisy of letting dirty mining elsewhere account for their new-age needs. This has to be channeled through MPs who have a voice in Parliament lobbying anyone that can threaten to dislodge this current administration.
Read an article last week claiming eco campaigners are deluded. Obviously a bit anti but one sentence noted we are sending 4 billion emails a day that require the equivalent power generation of 15 nuclear plants output. I couldnt confirm its veracity but it did say campaigning is fine as long as the dirty work such as washing rare earth metals with sulphuric acid, etc is done out of sight in China and Africa. Made me think about saintly Sweden !
Taka, pretty sure there was a campaign from the area by young people wanting more industry in the area to stop the young gravitating to the cities for work. They reckoned only a few, influential Sami benefited from reindeer and it was harming the area instead of helping. Dont know what became of that but it would be interesting to know if the drift away has continued to happen with lack of prospects.
Whatever response Baylan tries to come up with matters have changed. We now have a terrier like MP with the bit between her teeth watching and raising concern about his behaviour in Parliament. Nobody in politics welcomes that pressure in the public eye and this will not be brushed off so easily this time.
That lady Linda Modig is a smart cookie, trying to give background criticism to irk Baylan whilst tying him down as much as she can to an unambiguous answer.
One skill we have benefited from in ten years has been the ability to translate from swedish to english with google ! Couldnt master another language at my tender age.
When former Tesla manager Peter Carlsson said he wanted to build at €3bn battery farm in northern Sweden, many thought he was crazy.
Plenty of people investing in BEM might agree with that ! Hopefully his influence makes a sensible decision to be taken.
A friend of mine involved in mining up in the north says they have objectors travelling from the south west ,europe and sweden to object to every planning application on the grounds of climate change. They book camper vans, travel and leave loads of litter to be cleaned up after they leave and get day rate expenses from some source. The swedish govt is frozen with fear about offending these fanatics who really couldn't give a toss about jobs in the area they campaign in.
Cast your mind back Eric, wasn't there a time when the CAB was told to review the No decision after the MI had approved the licence to mine, and said Yes,perhaps 5-6 years ago ? The government then retracted or the CAB retracted after Sami pressure. I am not sure but I recall young locals forming a group in favour to boost employment prospects as they said young were leaving for the cities as reindeer herding were only a small band looking after their own interests.
Thanks you two, not paid as much attention as I used to. I recall asking for this approach a couple of years ago, pushing and briefing MPs and media about this wholly unjustified delay, good to read of Kurt being more proactive. Surely 71% swedish owned should evoke some response.
Looking to get the go ahead as our government has refused to call it in for planning. Tim Farron and Greta outraged but the council has approved it 3 times now after appeals as it creates 500 jobs Perhaps the tide is turning on some of the more hysterical issues about climate change. I really cant understand how they accept 'dirty mining' for their economic use instead of cleaner, better controlled mines. Could it just be out of sight, out of mind as long as my power,my energy,my central heating,my mobile phone and car,etc is functioning ? Over to Stockholm now.
On that point Paul, has anyone in BEM had sight of the correspondence between the Swedish govetnment and Unesco or even between departments of the Swedish government even ? Our media/lawyers would be chasing suchlike under Freedom of Information and a bit of pressure this way could put the skids under Baylan for his obfuscation on all matters. Several years ago I had emails to/from the MI and had confidence their recommendation would prevail.
Well said oaktree, one of our assets is the ability to agree to disagree. It is fundamental to a civilised society. I can be polite to suzy and recognise her wealth of knowledge on Kallak while disagreeing about Brexit. I can also be polite to swedish people for their kindly motives but swedish politicians is a step too far ! All the best to everyone for a healthy and ,hopefully, a wealthy New Year in 2021.
