If there is a large seller then the MM have to agree a price at which to execute, hence being held. If the price went below, then they would be losing out because others could sell at the lower price and they would be losing even more than the agreed price
therefore they are happy to let it rise above agreed price, which is much harder as the selling pressure is always there
for large buy orders, i think it is the opposite, they again agree a price, but manage it well enough that it can fall below and they make even more because they are filling the buy at sellers sell rates
way i see it anyway, either way, for buy and sell orders of size, they prefer a stable price if poss, just less risky.
either way, its all in the careful management but i could be talking nonsense
