My petition has just gone live. A short time ago I wrote up a petition on the gov website to ask for support to get the infrastructure of hydrogen filling stations moving so that people can have a choice of emissions-free car purchase. It would benefit people who can't charge at home, or need to travel long distances regularly, so they can have the same level of convenience they have today with fast refuelling. I'd like to demonstrate that there is significant support for this idea by reaching 100,000 signatures. Hi DireEmblem, that was LPG. Hydrogen refuelling is for running fuel cell vehicles. There was always a chicken and egg situation, no cars = no refuelling; no refuelling = no cars. Now there are a few cars available but still the refuelling in the UK is stubbornly unsupported by UK government. There didn't seem to be a mechanism for demonstrating an interest in long range, fast refuelling, emissions-free vehicles. Government and most of the automotive industry seem to think that standard battery EV is the answer for everyone. I'm hopeful that this petition gives us a platform to request choice.

Thanks bilbo. Following your suggestion, I don't know if there is a better way so I just sent it to greenpeace using there 'contact us' web page. I'd welcome suggestions from others too, particularly those better connected than I.

I assume you meant installing hydrogen within existing garages rather than specifically alongside. I'm hopeful they will at least acknowledge that hydrogen refuelling is going to be needed nationwide for the truck market, otherwise that won't get off the ground either. I'm pretty sure that's what ITM Power are now intending. It should be a reasonably short step to allow 700bar car refuelling once the truck-stops are established.

Government tax is the elephant in the room. They're almost certainly going to start charging per mile instead of tax on fuel. I can only guess that the rates would be different dependent on your vehicles fuel type. That could even level the playing field between BEV and FCEV...or widen it even further.

taskmaster, the figure of 67 miles may not be far off what you would do under normal usage on the smaller battery example. Those figures you quoted still only come to an approximation of 86 miles for the smaller truck and if you measure the operation on a window of 80% for typical charge cycles then you'd get to 68 miles. If you add in the fact that most manufacturers are still overestimating their range then I'd cautiously accept 67 miles as being pretty realistic. I'm not an EV expert and I'm also biased so happy to be challenged. Having to wait for 45 minutes before I could travel another miserly 67 miles... what a drag.

Agreed Bellers. Most of the decision-makers seem blissfully unaware of the sheer scale involved in a fully functioning EV infrastructure. Many are currently taken in by the simple calculation that on average if all cars were EVs then the current total supply would be enough, which is probably a fair assumption, but in reality many vehicles would be relying on 150kW+ for a top-up over lunch at a service station. If they don't support that with massive scale bulk storage batteries then those local grids are very likely under-rated. I will predict those stories hitting the mainstream media in about three years.
