Because the placee can afford to sell at a "loss" because they have taken fees and expenses to balance this, along with a possible short. They have no wish to hold the shares so the secret is to gauge when they have come to the end of their disposal. The MMs will then need to raise the SP to dispose of these shares at a profit. By no means a "gamble", quite predictable and I would say another week, probably Christmas Eve morning, would be a good time to buy, imho. What is even more predictable is that old money bags retired at 45 will tell you he bought back in on any rise, after the event of course.
