On the subject of stop losses; My personal take on them is that I place them when I have a decent profit buffer in a given share and try to set them outside of the potential intraday retrace. This can be tricky especially when there is volatility in the share and or the market in general. Another way to approach this is invest in companies with good mid to long term potential, if the fundamentals are sound then the retrace (hopefully) will be limited before new investors arrive to push the sp up again. A case in point would be JLP, I am in from 11p and considered taking profit on the initial rise above 20p but decided to hold fully appreciating a retrace could be possible. I decided in this case not to set a stop loss as my investment was not short term and I had a decent profit buffer , the retrace happened and I held. As you may appreciate today we are in the 20p zone again. Some may consider fortune favoured me here but I was prepared to take a hit on my profit for the longer term goal, as it transpired I did o.k (up to now). This particular startegy obviously doesn't apply to all investments but if you are in a well researched share for at least the medium term and have said profit buffer then it is a good test of nerves! :-) regards Dave
I was always reluctant to look at financials initially but stick at it and it does get easier. Of course it helps if you have a professional 'bean counter' to assist (eh Spacey;-) ) Thisismoney.co.uk can be helpful (look up the company and go to financials and fundamentals). Dig, dig, dig and eventually you will formulate an opinion, backed these up with historical RNS releases and links posted on LSE/iii/ADVFN and don't forget to make notes unless you have a photographic memory!! :-) regards Dave
Obviously Spacey's comments are bang on (evening Steeeeven!), I would add that relying on info from the boards sometimes proves to be less than accurate (always check info with websites/RNS info etc) Sometimes it may also pay to see where certain names are visiting/posting, who knows they may be on to something! :-) regards Dave Steve, will bell you tomorrow as Joanna is away with work so I won't get nagged due to lack of attention given!
seems like a lot of typing for "strong buy" LOL!!! :0) regards Dave
