I believe Italy has had no real growth this century. One thing for sure is they ain't Greece.

Just renewed our ESTA's for the States.... fill out a quick registration form, usual passport number, travel dates etc, wait 72 hours for approval, simples!

Two major differences-
1) You have apply before you travel.
2) They will send you home instantly if you land without one (some airlines ask to view your ESTA copy before travel, don't think they are liable for the return journey if you're refused entry though).
