RE: AIM5 Aug 2015 22:59
Hi V, obviously some bad times on AIM. However, if last May ( say 11 weeks ago), you had taken out a small punt on VAL at .21p, by the middle of the month ( following good news), a £1k investment would have been worth, on paper, £304K. I only mention this because it's a share you comment on. Now, since I did not own any shares ( unfortunately), I have no idea in what volume one could sell it. It wou;d have to be a fool who did not attempt to sell at least 50%. Now, on the other hand, if one had bought after the news, and paid about 60p, things are not so good with the price now at 33p. Timing is everything. There are plenty of these examples on AIM. Choose wisely.
Shorts. Plenty of on-line brokers deal in CFD's. I use Galvan as a broker, and it uses IG), Simply deposit some cash, give some personal details ( required for anti-money laundering), and tell broker ( or do it on-line) co. you want to short ( 90% of my trades are long, being more optomistic than you) , and broker will tell you the deposit you have to pay on the margin call.. There are many cos. that you cannot short ( or long) because of poor liquidity in market, and a lot of AIM shares come under this category. Be v v v careful, and choose wisely. the worst downside on a long is the sp hitting 0 and/or B/K. if one has a £5K ( sometimes the minimum) position, on AIM the deposit may be 25% and if hitting 0 ( without a stop loss) one loses the deposit and a further £3750, making a total of £5K loss. If short, there in no max loss ( unless a stop loss in place), since a share may skyrocket ( eg VAL), and losses could be enormous theoretically. Although in practice the broker will sell when your deposit has gone ( if it can?).
On a positive note, you are correct in as much it is far easier to find crap cos. on AIM, rather than good ones. Have a gander at CRU, but do your own research, and remember, multibaggers are few and far between, and much better to seek solid cos, with the potential to gain 10-20% pa, and they will make you £millions in 20 years of investing. All in MHO of course, and GL
