First to dealership forecourts will be GMC’s reboot of the Hummer, shedding the old gas-guzzler reputation of the discontinued icon SUV in favor of a zero-emissions upgrade. The GMC Hummer EV will be an all-electric pickup, and a vast one at that, with up to four electric motors and the ability to to crab-walk diagonal movements for navigating through tricky off-road courses (or tight parking lots).

It’ll be followed by the GMC Hummer EV SUV, an enclosed body version of the truck. That will have seating for up to seven, GMC has says, but pack the same technologies. It’ll also be priced similarly, with the early Launch Edition models commanding six-figure stickers and limited availability.

The GMC Sierra EV, in contrast, should be a little more affordable, though the automaker isn’t saying quite what to expect there yet. It’ll be positioned near the high end of the Sierra range, with GMC confirming that it’ll launch only in the Denali trim. That’s proved to be a very popular variant for GMC, helping nudge average transaction prices up considerably this year. GMC even has plans for a more premium trim, sitting above Denali, in the Sierra range.

As for this first electric Sierra Denali, details are still in short supply. GMC its basically sharing the lighting signature of the truck’s front end (and in render form at that). There’s a large – but blanked-off – grille with a shield design that illuminates, and a lit-up central GMC logo too.

In addition, the technology accounts for normal driving actions, such as looking in the side-view mirrors. If distracted behavior is detected, the driver is alerted through customizable audible or visual notifications. Integrating the camera with the interior mirror provides the best unobstructed view to the driver and offers the best vantage point for additional occupant monitoring features. Chinese EV automaker NIO announced it will reveal a new model later this week during its NIO Day 2021 event in Shanghai. The annual event is normally when NIO introduces new models, and a teaser image from the company may confirm rumors that the public will get its first glimpse of the ET5 later this week.


Earlier this year (NIO Day 2020 was actually held this past January due to COVID-19), NIO revealed plans was to expand outside of electric SUVs and unveiled its flagship sedan, the ET7. At the time, NIO reported the ET7 would be the first of three EVs to debut on the NIO Technology Platform 2.0 in 2022.

In addition to bringing a luxury EV sedan to market, the automaker followed up in May with plans to expand to markets outside of China, beginning in Norway.

While Norway will not see the ET7 until 2022, NIO has already begun official deliveries of its ES8 SUV, which has long been accompanied by hints of further expansion plans for Europe. This includes Germany, which will soon see the ET7 as well.

Interior sensing provides that context through occupancy detection (how many people are present, where they're sitting and seat position); and activity detection, identifying cellphone usage, eating, drinking, smoking or other activities that introduce distraction.

Another key safety feature is the ability to detect children or pets left behind in a vehicle -- another cause of death in vehicles. Interior sensing systems address this using occupant detection to recognize the child, or object detection to identify a child seat.
