Now the Veoneer/Qualcomm deal has gone through yesterday surely we have to start seeing some contracts between us and Q. They already at $13b sales and are looking in a very good place.

Not only with Q. What about with Ambarella & Omnivision? Strategic partners win business together usually.

HONDA AND GM COLLABORATION DESIGNED TO ENABLE GLOBAL PRODUCTION OF MILLIONS OF EVS
DETROIT / TOKYO – General Motors and Honda today announced plans to expand the two companies’ relationship to a new chapter by codeveloping a series of affordable electric vehicles based on a new global architecture using next-generation Ultium battery technology.

The companies are working together to enable global production of millions of EVs starting in 2027, including compact crossover vehicles, leveraging the two companies’ technology, design and sourcing strategies. The companies will also work toward standardizing equipment and processes to achieve world-class quality, higher throughput and greater affordability. The compact crossover segment is the largest in the world, with annual volumes of more than 13 million vehicles.

GM and Honda also will discuss future EV battery technology collaboration opportunities, to further drive down the cost of electrification, improve performance and drive sustainability for future vehicles.

GM is already working to accelerate new technologies like lithium-metal, silicon and solid-state batteries, along with production methods that can quickly be used to improve and update battery cell manufacturing processes. Honda is making progress on its all-solid-state battery technology which the company sees as the core element of future EVs. Honda has established a demonstration line in Japan for all-solid-state batteries and is making further progress toward mass production.

“GM and Honda will share our best technology, design and manufacturing strategies to deliver affordable and desirable EVs on a global scale, including our key markets in North America, South America and China,” said Mary Barra, GM chair and CEO. “This is a key step to deliver on our commitment to achieve carbon neutrality in our global products and operations by 2040 and eliminate tailpipe emissions from light-duty vehicles in the U.S. by 2035. At GDC 2022, game developers got a taste of things to come with PlayStation VR2. That experience included a deeper look at the possibilities offered by eye-tracking.

It's no secret that Sony is planning on its new virtual reality headset having eye-tracking capabilities, but now we're hearing more about what that might mean. Including why it might be a game-changer.

During a talk on the Unity game engine, developers were showing how this eye-tracking technology could be employed to improve the performance of games. Essentially the plan is to employ foveated rendering, to boost performance. This works by tracking what the player is looking at and then rendering that part of the game in the most detail. This allows the headset to optimise the PlayStation's processing power and to thoroughly improve the user experience too.

That's not the only use case though. The Unity game engine developers also expanded upon the possibilities. The eye-tracking can also be used to magnify what gamers are looking at, helping users focus on what they're trying to interact with. This theoretically makes it easier to grab objects in virtual reality but also to engage with the world around them.

The PlayStation VR2 headset will seemingly be able to help with things like aim assist - depending on what you're looking at. Its eye-tracking can also monitor not only where you're looking but other movements of your eye too. If you wink, for example, that could be translated into the game world.

This eye-tracking could also be used to improve the player experience as game developers could gather heat map data based on where players are looking. This will help with beta testing where gamers are getting stuck with certain sections of the game - like puzzles, boss fights or other challenges.

One thing is for sure, virtual reality continues to improve and Sony has big plans for PlayStation VR2.

In the interview i posted earlier he said Automakers are making decisions who they will work with for the next few years now.

Its time to start showing us shareholders that the jams coming today, not years down the track. 2022 was always the year Auto was meant to kick off with the bigger contracts and SOP for many models. I know its only just starting but we need to be shown that alls rosey and wins are down the road are going to come in thick and thin.

The likes of Colin are showing a very large share of the market in their predictions from their research.

Qualcomm announced that it has completed its rather complicated acquisition of Arriver. The acquisition completes the software stack for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Driving (AD) solutions.

The announcement signals the completion of a significant step towards Qualcomm’s efforts to become a major supplier of auto technology for the future vehicle platforms, especially for electric vehicles (EVs) and Autonomous Vehicles (AVs). In addition to Qualcomm’s leadership position in future telematics and infotainment systems, the company has announced relationships with several major automotive OEMs, including BMW, GM/Cruise and Ferrari, for ADAS/AD platforms. In this race to provide a complete hardware and software platform, Qualcomm is competing with solutions from the likes of Intel/Mobileye, NXP, Nvidia, and Renesas, as well as in-house systems like Tesla’s.

With driver fatigue being a major focus for the Australian trucking industry in recent times, the National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP) has responded.

The program has released a new webinar to help provide guidance for transport workers and their employers regarding how best to stay safe on the roads.

The webinar Emerging Technologies Driver Monitoring Project: Eyes on Fatigue presents an overview and the results of a recently conducted research into the heavy vehicle transport and logistics sector.

Part of a joint initiative involving the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC), the Queensland Trucking Association (QTA), In Cabin Technology Providers and 11 transport and logistics organisations and drivers.

Aiming to provide insight into determining the effectiveness of in cabin driver monitoring technology designed to reduce driver distraction, inattention and fatigue in a heavy vehicle transport operation, the results have been discussed in the online webinar.

GM Authority reports that the upcoming GM Ultra Cruise system will include a similar “summon feature,” allowing users to send for their GM vehicle. The website claims that GM Ultra Cruise is a cutting-edge driver-assistance system enabling drivers to take their hands off the wheel and let the vehicle navigate autonomously.

“Looking ahead, it’s likely that a Summon feature will be part of the upcoming GM Ultra Cruise system,” GM Authority wrote. “GM Ultra Cruise is an evolution of the GM Super Cruise system and is expected to enable drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel during city driving. By comparison, the GM Super Cruise system is only available for activation on highways.”

In June 2021, GM announced a $35 million investment toward advancing their vehicle technology. The automaker is racing to establish GM as a competitor in the EV established companies like Volkswagen or EV/AV industry leader Tesla. According to CNBC, GM plans to sell more than one million electric vehicles per year by 2025.

Vehicles with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that automate some tasks — braking, acceleration and steering in some situations — are more common at all price levels for 2022. They also are becoming more sophisticated, with some now making lane changes, allowing for brief hands-free driving and more.

It’s important to emphasize, however, that there are no self-driving cars for sale today. Advanced driver-assist tech offers convenience, relief from some driving tasks and some additional safety, but all currently require an engaged driver ready to take over when required. The latest AAA automated vehicle survey indicates that is OK with most drivers. Just 22% think automakers should focus on self-driving vehicles, while 80% simply want current ADAS tech to work better. That agrees with Cars.com’s real-world experience; we’ve found that such systems vary in smooth performance, accuracy and ease of use.

How XL Express is Adopting A.I. to Support Road Safety

Amongst the ongoing infrastructure and technology advancements taking place at XL Express nationwide, the latest is the installation of Guardian technology by Seeing Machines. All company-owned prime movers will soon have the advanced safety technology installed in an effort to support the safety of our drivers and reduce the likelihood of a fatigue-related event on the road.
In a 2019 Report, the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Alertness, Safety, and Productivity for the National Transport Commission found that slow eye and eyelid movement, longer blink durations, and prolonged eye closure are reliable predictors of drowsiness and fatigue. The Transport Accident Commission also stated that around 20% of fatal road accidents involve driver fatigue. Numerous reports by safety commissions across Australia drive home the importance of having Seeing Machines in large vehicles to ensure the safety of both drivers and others on the road.
XL Express National Linehaul & Equipment Manager, Richard Thomas, stated that “it’s a common issue in the industry that drivers are at risk of becoming fatigued and distracted at the wheel without realising. The system we are implementing across our fleet is an essential tool for risk mitigation that will enable us to educate and coach our drivers to actively stay alert and aware of their health and wellbeing at all times.”
Seeing Machines works by utilising Artificial Intelligence to monitor a driver’s face and eyes to determine alertness, wakefulness, and attentiveness. If unsafe driving behaviour is detected (e.g., fatigue or distraction indications) the system begins recording the event, as audio alarms and powerful seat vibrations are activated to alert the driver.
Our fleet management team is alerted in real-time so they can contact the driver and instruct a break or take other measures to reduce risk. The team then has access to event recordings, allowing trend analysis, ongoing improvement, and feedback for drivers. This technology ultimately works to reduce the likelihood of a fatigue-related event by more than 90%.
It is clear that Seeing Machines advanced safety technology is not only a great tool to add to the sophisticated safety systems already in place, but it is essential to keep our drivers, and others, safe on the road.

Accidents Caused By Employees Using Phones While Driving May Impose an Employer’s Liability

One need to look no further than recent case law concerning employers’ liability with respect to an employee’s distracted driving arising from cell phone use.

In 2012, a Texas court held Coca-Cola liable for $21,000,000 dollars in damages when an employee, while using their cell phone and driving, struck another motorist. According to court documents, the jury heard overwhelming evidence that although Coca-Cola was aware of the dangers of using a cell phone while driving, including having a cognitive distraction of 37% while on a cell phone, the company failed to warn the employee driver of these risks as well as inform them about data concerning fatalities and injuries arising from cell phone use while operating vehicles. When asked about the company’s corporate governance policies, Bob Hilliard, a lead trial lawyer in the case commented: “Today's verdict I hope sends a message to corporate America that you can't have employees on a cell phone and endanger the motoring public.” [1]
An off-duty police officer was texting moments before a fatal crash and because he was driving a police cruiser, his employer was held liable for $4,000,000.
