We understand that this is the first time a certification agency has granted AiP on such a design which should cement AFC’s roll as the leader in the ammonia / fuel cell space across the maritime industry. Zeus note today
ABB’s maritime team introduced VARD to AFC in the Summer of 2021. AFC was uniquely placed with its alkaline chemistry and ammonia cracker technology, to fill the metrics set by the client. Since then, engineers from AFC Energy have been working confidentially with VARD to design a cargo ship propulsion and auxiliary power system integrating its fuel cell system.
Fincaria S.p.A. is an Italian shipbuilding company based in Trieste, Italy. Already the largest shipbuilder in Europe, after the acquisition of Vard in 2013, Fincantieri group doubled in size to become the fourth largest in the world. The company builds both commercial and militar
Vard is just a small part of Europe’s largest ship builder. “
VARD is just a small part of Europe’s largest ship builder ! No wonder we didn’t attend the British Motor Show
To meet 2030 decarbonisation targets for the shipping industry, Norway alone is expected to require 1,100 zero or low emission ships, including 450 bulk carrier cargo ships of the type envisaged by ZeroCoaster.
“450 bulk cargo ships” we are going to need a bigger hanger!
Great work once again Haggis thanks
“Telecommunications companies need them to run their mobile phone towers across the country. Telecoms giant MTN MTNJ.J told local media in 2015 that it spends 8 billion naira ($26 million) annually on diesel.”
Frank Muehlon, President of ABB's E-Mobility Division, said:
With the accelerated switch to electric vehicles, there is an ever more pressing need for additional fast charging options, and particularly in low-cost areas that are not connected to the power grid or where the power grid is restricted.
"We believe that AFC Energy's zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell system is part of the solution that enables us to make electric vehicles accessible to everyone."

The technology giant is building about 100 low-impact data centers per year as it decarbonizes.
Microsoft plans to build 50 to 100 new data centers per year and is working to make them greener with hydrogen fuel power and algae bricks. The company’s challenge to decarbonize is paired with that of keeping up with customer demand.

that, due to lack of charging infrastructure at Gleneagles (just two charge points) it would use diesel generators there to charge the electric vehicles. While these will be fuelled by recycled vegetable oil – and so reduce carbon emissions – the story highlights the inadequacy of EV charging infrastructure in the UK.

Looks like we are on the right team
ABB has an installed base of over 50,000 drivetrains for heavy electric vehicles including rail vehicles, buses, construction equipment, mining and special vehicles. ABB has also partnered with Northvolt to develop a state-of-the-art lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery factory.
We are definitely playing with the big boys now
