So at a typical price of 40 USD per Kg of Vanadium each litre of electrolyte would contain around USD 3.50 worth of Vanadium. Prices of Vanadium electrolyte of between 7 and 10 USD seem therefore reasonable.

the world didn't ever need so much Vanadium in the past so it seemed to have got most of what it needed as a byproduct of steel production. This was good because most of that Vanadium was then needed for high strength steel production. This explains why there are so few primary Vanadium producers.

a primary producer is someone who digs ore purely for the purposes of getting the Vanadium out of it. They can decide to dig more or less according to their processing capacity and the price of Vanadium at the time. Secondary producers produce as a byproduct of something like iron smelting - hence they can only produce as much Vanadium as the economics of their primary product dictates - hence they cannot really increase their production if they wanted to.

bonxie - you have neglected the fact that VRFB's last approximately 3x as long as Lithium-ion batteries and so the levelized cost of energy storage is reduced by the same factor so you cannot simply compare cell level Lithium-ion capex with VRFB capex.
