CHD Municipality to invest in coal mining February 22, 2013 | Filed under: Business,News,Politics | Posted by: Luke Charter By Luxolo Twani QUEENSTOWN – While the nation is engaged on a semantics debate about nationalisation and state involvement in mining, Chris Hani District Municipality has decided to be hands-on in the coal mining taking place in Lady Frere. At a special council meeting, the council approved coal mining through the Chris Hani development Agency (CHDA). Elitheni Coal (Pty) Ltd is a coal mine in the Chris Hani District Municipality, situated in the Emalahleni Local Municipality area of Lady Frere. Motivating for their involvement in mining Council Speaker, Ms Nozibele Makanda said: “An opportunity exists for the Chris Hani District municipality to provide substantial support in response to the local economic development mandate by investing in catalytic priority projects within the district. Elitheni Coal Mine is one of such catalytic priority projects”. Council documents reveal that an opportunity for shareholder acquisition in Elitheni exists and CHDA has been offered such. With the conversion of the bridging loan, I believe their little conglomerate will control @49% of the shares so I would say they already have quite a bit invested. The question is where will they go from here?

I'm hoping Ben Martins (Minister of Transport) has something to say about the "Railway Green Paper" Fri. morning.......Like approving it so they can get on with the branch lines. The other speeches this past week by President Zuma and Ms Peters were inconclusive as far as we are concerned.

I believe you are South African living here in the UK aren't you? It must be heart breaking to see the future leaders of SA being penalised and put behind before they start. UK believe it or not has its upside doesn't?

President Zumas State of the Nation address next Thurs. Feb. 14th. They keep banging on about the National Development Plan maybe he will now get around to putting the fire under his ministers and parastatals and start being more productive.They have a lot of plans .....they just need to finish implementing them....

Once the dust has settled from the Coal Indaba, Mining Indaba, Cabinet Lekgotla and the African Energy Indaba this month I'm hoping the company will have a greater reason for showing the journalists around Elitheni on Feb. 23rd.....
