Wage inflation15 Aug 2023 15:10
The inflation we have been suffering from is nothing to do with wages.
Todays general inflation rate was caused by a number of factors.
BOE incompetence; pumping hundreds of billions into the economy then failing to start to raise interest rates far earlier claiming looming inflation would be transitory thus not giving the economy time to adjust to return to more normal interest rate levels.
To make matters worse the world (not just us ) were hit with a triple whammy of energy price shock , cereal and wheat price shock ( Russian invasion of Ukraine ) and poor harvests around the world.
The wage inflation is a symptom not the cause of our inflation.
The combination of interest rate , energy and food price hikes made the clamour for above normal wage increases inevitable and whilst I have no data to back it up I would expect to find the public sector have received better wage increases than the private sector.
I have little doubt the BOE will continue to increase base rate and keep them at too high a level for too long thus continuing with their track record of always being behind the 8 ball.
