I think better thing to do is go for paper certificates. For example, when EVRAZ want to offer American ADRs in exchange for UK shares then you can exchange them if you have paper certs and cannot be done if they are with HL for example.
Obviously they cannot make such offers as not all would be able to convert to paper certs but there is no harm to convert to paper certs. I had royal mail group paper certs, which I was able to sell by submitting the paper share certificate. Ofcourse disadvantage is that if you have shares in an online account then it is easy to sell them once they are listed back but with the current situation, it is better to go for paperless if you have an option.
