Short-termism, fronted by populist opportunists who win the hearts and minds of the easily duped (stand up, slug, take your applause) is currently winning against science, logic and humanity, sure. Slug comes across like a basement-dwelling teenage incel, so maybe he'll be around long enough for a grown up to re-take Washington and avoid a catastrophe... But more likely the damage will be done by then.

The hope is that history repeats itself, and technological advancement renders his blinkered views moot before we all suffer from people falling for catchphrases like 'drill, baby, drill'... And trump and his easily-led followers will go the way of those who opposed the printing press, or railways, or cars, or the internet.
