RE: BP17 Jun 2020 12:13
hi bigbadz, i think you misunderstand. i am primarily a longer term
investor in shares, rather than a trader, but i do actively trade some
chunks of stocks where I am overall long but see some good short-
term trading opportunities. so with BP recently, have been actively
trading back & forth some blocks of shares varying between 5-20%
of a core long holding. from a longer term investment perspective, i
am much more interested in *total returns* over time, from the combo
of dividends plus capital gains, rather than just dividends. so the point
is not that BPβs dividend doesnβt matter to me, more than in the longer
term i think the total return from holding BP will be higher if they bite the
bullet sooner rather than later on the divi, which looks unsustainably high.
i donβt think thatβs about βthe mood of the dayβ, but more about long term
shifts for the future of oil & gas, taking into account e.g. shale production,
global economic outlook, & carbon emission issues. all just imo, of course.
