RE: Right Time Right Place Right Now28 Nov 2019 11:12
If you count everything under the bonnet of an ev there are more than 20 parts. If Lawrence is breaking a sparkplug down into individual components, then you had better break down an inverter into all its components as a fair comparison. I bet the printed circuit board in that will have a thousand different components alone. Then you have the charger, another few thousand components in that as well. The battery pack and all the cells and the BMS. What about breaking the cells down into their individual components. You could go on and on!
Mr cautious is right. You just have to look at the main components. And that article Lawrence referred to said 2000 parts!
The point is though, we all know an electric motor and its single speed gearbox is far less complex than an internal combustion engine, with its 5-6-7 speed gearbox and associated clutch and everything else that Requires it to work. As a modern mode of transport, they are finished. There is just no way they can compete with an ev drivetrain, especially once batteries come down in price. We haven't even started mass production yet, and they are already far cheaper if you factor in the total running costs over the life of the car.
ICE will continue to be used, because they are engineering master pieces, and people will always want the sound, smell and nature of them. But they will be used in the same way the horse is now. For pleasure, not nipping to the local shop in!
