Correct re: AIM shares and their IHT relief. One exclusion is those traded in foreign exchanges as you say. Another exclusion is AIM shares that are predominantly dealing in property/land rental (which is also exempt from Business Property Relief re IHT).

AIM portfolios are provided by some IFAs but they would only use a smaller % of total assets as a means to reduce IHT exposure rather than remove it entirely.

That’s right...you can double up with CGT allowance that way. Also, you can sell 5th April, then again on 6th as new tax year....but obviously that’s a long way off.

AIM shares are treated like Business Property Relief for IHT. Good way to mitigate against IHT rather than relying on the seven year gifting rules (but volatile as we all know).

As for VAL, I was sat on huge losses for years but averaged down at 8.5p a few weeks agoso now in a healthy profit. Not a huge holding (52K shares in my ISA and 90k share in my SIPP). But could help with a loft extension at my the house I’m buying......good luck one and all....

CGT is due in the year of disposal. It’s the gain over the annual allowance in each year. It doesn’t apply in ISAs. The base cost is purchase price of the shares.

You can transfer to a spouse w/o CGT to use her allowance to offset any gains. But the spouses base cost will be the same as when you bought them, not the value at transfer.

If you transfer to anyone else, CGT will apply just as if you sold them.

Most AIM shares are free of IHT if owned for at least two years.

I sold this morning at 4.26 for a near 10% loss. I only bought in mid Sept as a L/T hold. This drop is too severe for my liking.......

Any ideas why the drop? I know XD last week but this seems a little extreme........

As someone who in the last few weeks switched to Aldi from Tesco, after shopping overwhelmingly with Tesco for well over a decade, I can assure you Aldi is a lot cheaper. Many of the products are comparable in quality. I tend to buy free range, or higher welfare meat for example, and quality more or less the same. It Some things we still get from Tesco as def better, or Aldi don't sell, but our switch is saving us (Family of 4, two young kids) approx. £40 a week.

For the record, I am not invested in Tesco but have just put them on my watch list as I think they could well recover. We'll see

I doubt it. I don't mind people with more negative outlooks on shares on various boards, but I just don't think there is any basis for those figures. The SP has been at 14-16 for ages, so cant see how it will drop below, even if it gets to the lower end. I could be wrong of course, but I am confident it won't. As for gold at 720....he pulled that out if thin air! . Though, as he says, time will tell.

1180 and 1140 look pretty strong support to me. So, still not sure why you have picked $720. Oil is still under too much scrutiny, though I do see upside there mid/long term. 10p ain't coming with placings being at 16p. Too much self interest with PEEL involved so heavily in that. I would not be surprised if part of the SP rise beforehand, no doubt tickled up by PEEL, was summat to do with the funding. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion but I think it's coming out your ring piece.

On what basis will gold drop to $720? Not sure how you arrive at that.

Lower SP surely. My timing stinks. I sold out of SOLO today (with a GOOD profit) to get BACK in AMA for likley gold rise above 1300, with a little help from the ECB (very short term) and also next two quarters of AMA specific developments. And I was close to leaving it until tomorrow. Gutted....oh well.....

.....has fallen through support. However, the fundamentals still make AMA a buy and/or hold.

I can see this settling around 5/6% up for today. MMs always gonna spike this up after the DM article. As long as we close on or above 18p then I can see us re-rating from here. Next stop being the low 20s. The DM article gave AMA the push it needed to get past the 17s. Just gotta stay above now.

is a tough nut to crack. Had decent volume over last few weeks and still capped here. Not sure what to make of it. My hope is if it gets through AMA moves up quickly.

2013 was a shocker gold though has stabilised. However, it seems to me to be in an indecisive phase. Should gold manage to break through 1280 then I can see a sustained rise to 1400s. Major support at 1180 so upside is greater risk/reward. Should gold not break 1235 in the s/t, this could also signal a bullish phase. AMA have been realistic in my view. Just need the SP to reflect this!

Certainly hope so. I caught last 15 of Wall Street trading on CNBC and every contributor backed gold and miners. Just hope they are right.....

He is from South Africa (not sure if actually South African). His family were very vocal anti-apartheid campaigners in the 60s. I think they left to the UK due to political pressure from the SA Govt in the 60s or 70s. He is respected in Africa. He also understands the continent and is, I think, a good man to have on board.
